Annotations & Explanations (টীকা ও ব্যাখ্যা)

"But not because of its magnificence / Dear is the Casuarina to my soul" কবি এখানে বলছেন যে ক্যাজ্যুরিনা গাছটি বিশালতার কারণে নয়, বরং গাছটি আত্মার কাছাকাছি বিরাজ করছে বলে তাঁর কাছে প্রিয়। এখানে কবির গাছটির প্রতি ভালোবাসা শারীরিক সৌন্দর্যকে ছাপিয়ে যাচ্ছে।

The poetess wants to say that the Casuarina tree is her favourite not due to its gigantic stature, but because of its closeness to her soul. Here the poetess' love for the tree goes beyond its physical beauty.

"Beneath it we have played; though years may roll" কবি এখানে তাঁর শৈশবে কাটানো রঙিন দিনগুলির স্মৃতিচারণা করছেন। কবি তাঁর দাদা ও দিদির সাথে কত সুন্দর ও আবেগঘন মুহূর্ত কাটিয়েছেন তাঁর প্রিয় গাছটির নীচে। যদিও বছর পেরিয়ে গেছে স্মৃতিগুলো তাঁর মনে এখনও তরতাজা।

Here the poetess recalls the nostalgic memories of her good old days - how she along with her dear and near ones spent some pleasurable moments under the 'dear tree'. Although time has passed, and 'sweet companions' are no more, their memories are very much vibrant and resonant in the poetess's mind.

"O sweet companions" এখানে মধুর সাথীরা বলতে কবি তাঁর বড় দাদা আবজু এবং বড় দিদি অরু দত্তের কথা বলছেন।

Here the phrase "sweet companions" refers to the poetess' elder brother Abju and her elder sister Aru whom she loved very much.

"loved with love intense" কবি এখানে বলতে চেয়েছেন যে তাঁর প্রিয় সাথীদের গভীরভাবে ভালোবেসেছিলেন।

Here the poetess wants to say that her love for her dear and near ones is genuine. Her love is unalloyed and unadulterated.

"For your sake shall the tree be ever dear!" তোমাদের জন্যই গাছটি চিরকাল প্রিয় হয়ে থাকবে।

The tree will be remembered forever for the sweet connection/nexus it establishes between the poetess and her siblings - for the happy memories of her elder brother and sister.

"Blent with your images, it shall arise / In memory" তোমাদের স্মৃতি(চিত্র) মিশ্রিত হয়ে গাছটি জেগে উঠবে আমার স্মৃতিতে।

The memories of the poetess's close companions will be mixed with the image of the tree.

"... till hot tears blind mine eyes!" যতক্ষণ না গরম চোখের জল আমার চোখকে অন্ধ করে দেয়। কবির হৃদয় অশ্রুসিক্ত। তিনি প্রিয়জনদের হারিয়ে এতটাই ব্যথিত ও মর্মাহত যে তিনি কিছুই দেখতে পাচ্ছেন না তাঁর প্রিয় দাদা ও দিদির প্রতিমূর্তি ছাড়া।

The poetess's eyes are full of tears. She cannot see anything except the images of her dear elder brother and elder sister.

"What is that dirge-like murmur that I hear" কবি শোকগাথার মতো গুনগুন শব্দ শুনতে পারছেন যেটি তার প্রিয় ক্যাজুয়্রিনা গাছটির দিক থেকে আসছে।

The poetess can hear a soft indistinct sound - the sound of the wind near her favourite tree.

"like the sea breaking on a shingle-beach?" যেমন করে সমুদ্র আছড়ে পড়ে অমসৃণ নুড়িপাথরযুক্ত বেলাভূমিতে।

Sea waves are hitting the shore which is full of pebbles. Shingle symbolises the poetess' isolation and separation from her close companions.

"It is the tree's lament" এটা হচ্ছে গাছের ক্রন্দন। এখানে কবি বলতে চেয়েছেন যে গাছটি যেন তাঁর দুঃখের ভাগীদার। গাছটি সমব্যাথী - কবির দুঃখে দুঃখী।

The tree is lamenting the loss of the poetess' dear and near ones. The tree, too, like the poetess, is shocked at the sudden death of the poetess' elder brother and sister. The tree is thus sympathetic to the poetess' woes and worries.

"an eerie speech" একটি ভূতুড়ে বাণী। গাছের আর্তনাদ অনেকের কাছে একটি ভূতুড়ে কণ্ঠস্বর বা বাণী বলে মনে হতে পারে।

The tree's mourning may seem to be a weird utterance to someone who can hear the noise.

"That haply to the unknown land may reach" যে আওয়াজ হয়তো অজানা দেশে পৌঁছাতে পারে। কবি আশাবাদী যে গাছের আর্তনাদ হয়তো অচিনপুরীতে পৌঁছে যাবে, যে অজানা বা নাম না জানা দেশে তাঁর দাদা ও দিদি বসবাস করছেন।

The poetess thinks that the mysterious sound of the tree, may reach the unknown land, that is, the land of the departed to express the sadness of the tree as well as the poetess.
