Annotations & Explanations (টীকা ও ব্যাখ্যা)

"When first my casement is wide open thrown/ At dawn" যখন ভোরবেলায় আমার কাঁচের জানালাটা প্রথম খোলা হয়।

When early in the morning, the Poetess opens her windows in her own home in Calcutta/Kolkata, she sees some delightful sights and scenes in her own garden.

"my eyes delighted on it rest" কবির চোখ জুড়িয়ে যায় যখন তিনি তাঁর বাগানে মনোরম ও মনোমুগ্ধকর দৃশ্য উপভোগ করেন।

The poetess is happy to visualise the exquisite beauty in her own garden.

"... on its crest / A gray baboon sits statue-like, alone / Watching the sunrise" গাছের মগডালে একটি ধূসর রঙের বানরজাতীয় প্রাণী (বেবুন) মূর্তির মতো, একাকী বসে সূর্যোদয় উপভোগ করছে।

The poetess sees a gray-coloured baboon sitting on the top most branch of her dear Casuarina tree. The gray baboon sits as still as a statue. Alone, the baboon is enjoying the beauty of the sunrise.

"while on lower boughs / His puny offspring leap about and play" যখন ক্যাজুয়রিনা গাছটার নীচের ডালগুলিতে তার (বেবুনের) ছোট বাচ্চাগুলো এদিক ওদিক লাফাতে থাকে এবং খেলতে থাকে।

On the lower branches of the Casuarina tree, the little children of the baboon jump here and there. They are in a sportive mood or mode. They are very much happy in their present state.

বি. দ্র. (Note on 'Kokilas'): এখানে লক্ষনীয় বিষয় এই যে, কবি 'cuckoos' না বলে 'Kokilas' বলেছেন। কিন্তু কেন? কবি তরু দত্তের 'কোকিলাজ' (Kokilas) শব্দটির ব্যবহার তাঁর সংস্কৃত সাহিত্যে অগাধ পাণ্ডিত্যের পরিচয় দেয়। এটি বোঝায় যে কবি বাংলা, ইংরাজী ও ফরাসী ভাষার পাশাপাশি সংস্কৃত সাহিত্যেও পারদর্শী ছিলেন।

The use of the word 'Kokilas' instead of 'cuckoos' shows Toru Dutt's deep knowledge in Sanskrit literature, especially Manusmriti where a perceptive reader can find the reference to 'Kokilas'.

"And far and near Kokilas hail the day" কাছে দূরে কোকিলেরা তাদের মিষ্টি গানে দিনকে স্বাগত জানায়।

The Kokilas welcome the day with their sweet song.

"And to their pastures wend our sleepy cows;" তন্দ্রাচ্ছন্ন গরুগুলি তাদের তৃণভূমির দিকে এগিয়ে চলেছে।

এখানে Thomas Gray's "Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard" এর সেই লাইন গুলির কথা মনে করা যেতে পারে যেখানে গরুগুলি আস্তে আস্তে করে তৃণভূমির দিকে এগিয়ে যাচ্ছে- "The lowing herd wind slowly o'er the lea".

"And in the shadow, on the broad tank ... like snow enmassed" ক্যাজুয়রিনা গাছটির কাছে এক বিশালাকার জলাশয় রয়েছে। প্রাচীন ধূসর বর্ণের গাছটির ছায়া জলাশয়ের মধ্যে পড়ছে। এই সুন্দর ও সুবিশাল জলাশয়ের মধ্যে জলপদ্ম বা শালুক ফুল ফুটে আছে-ঠিক যেন মনে হচ্ছে বরফ একজায়গায় জমা হয়েছে (পুঞ্জীভূত হয়েছে)।

The shadow of the enormous Casuarina tree is reflected on the huge pond which is situated near the old tree. The tank or pond is the birthplace of water lilies which look like gathered snow. This vivid visual and graphic detail reminds one of Toru Dutt's sonnet "Baugmaree" - "...the white lotus changes into a cup of silver."
