Annotations & Line Meanings (টীকা ও পংক্তির অর্থ)

"Therefore, I fain would consecrate a lay / Unto thy honour" সেইজন্য আমি আনন্দের সাথে একটি গান (গাঁথা) উৎসর্গ করতে চাই তোমার সম্মানে।

The tree holds a pivotal position, a special space, in Toru Dutt's mind. The poetess wishes to honour her favourite tree in a grandiose manner. Therefore, she decides to devote a song or a poem in memory of the Casuarina tree.

"... tree, beloved of those / Who now in blessed sleep, for aye, repose" গাছটি, তাদের কাছে প্রিয়, যারা এখন স্বর্গীয় নিদ্রায় (আশীর্বাদপূর্ণ ঘুমে) চিরতরের বিশ্রাম নিচ্ছে।

The tree is not only the poetess' favourite but also beloved to those dear and near ones who are now dead, that is, absorbed in peaceful sleep in heaven.

"Mayest thou be numbered when my days are done / With deathless trees - like those in Borrowdale" যখন আমার সময় শেষ হবে তখন তুমি যেন অমর গাছদের মাঝে - বোরোডেলের সেই গাছগুলির মত গণ্য হও।

The poetess hopes that even after her death, the Casuarina tree will be listed in the rank of the immortals, very much like the yew trees in Wordsworth's poem.

"Under whose awful branches lingered pale / Fear, trembling Hope, and Death, the skeleton / And Time the shadow" যার ভয়ঙ্কর ডালপালার নিচে বিবর্ণ ভয়, কম্পমান আশা, মৃত্যু রূপ কঙ্কাল ও সময়ের ছায়া ঘুরে বেড়াত।

Toru Dutt gives a graphic yet gothic description of the yew trees in Borrowdale where abstract ideas like Fear, Hope, Death and Time reign supreme. Toru Dutt here highlights the all-consuming power of Death and Time.

"...though weak the verse / That would thy beauty fain, oh, fain rehearse" যদিও আমার এই কবিতা দুর্বল, তবু তা আনন্দের সাথে তোমার সৌন্দর্যকে বারবার প্রকাশ করতে চায়।

Here the poetess admits that her poem is inadequate in terms of describing the real beauty and charm of the tree. The repetition of 'fain' expresses her deep desire to immortalise the tree through poetry.

"May Love defend thee from Oblivion's curse" ভালোবাসা যেন তোমাকে বিস্মৃতির অভিশাপ থেকে রক্ষা করে।

At the end of the poem, the poetess is optimistic/hopeful. She hopes that love will protect her dear casuarina tree from 'Oblivion's curse'—from being forgotten forever. Thus, love has the supreme power to impart eternity to any living being or object.
