Annotations & Explanations (টীকা ও ব্যাখ্যা)

"Like a huge Python" একটি বিশালাকার অজগর সাপের মত।

'Python' may suggest a fatal woman, a romantic enchantress; অজগর সাপটি একটি ভয়ংকরী মহিলা বা একটি জাদুকরীকে বোঝাতে পারে।

"winding round and round / The rugged trunk" খসখসে গুঁড়িটির চারপাশে বৃত্তাকারে পেঁচিয়ে রয়েছে।
"indented deep with scars" গভীরভাবে দাঁত বসিয়ে ক্ষত চিহ্ন তৈরি করেছে।

The word 'scars' expresses the memory and anguish of Toru Dutt who lost her siblings - her elder brother Abju and her elder sister Aru - who were her constant companions in her childhood. Symbolically the poetess wants to say that just as the creeper has created the wound by winding round the Casuarina tree, in the similar way, the death of her elder brother Abju in 1865 at the age of 14 and her elder sister Aru in 1874 at the age of 20 has created a vacuum and a void, a gap and chasm in the mind of the poetess. This loss is something irrepairable.

"Up to its very summit near the stars / A creeper climbs" একটি লতানো গাছ গোড়া থেকে চূড়া পর্যন্ত উঠে গেছে। যেন মনে হচ্ছে গাছটি নক্ষত্রদের কাছাকাছি পৌঁছে গেছে।

The tree is so tall that the poetess thinks that the top of the tree seems to come near the stars.

"in whose embraces bound/ No other tree could live" যার আলিঙ্গনে বাঁধা পড়ে / অন্য কোন গাছ হলে হয়তো বাঁচতে পারত না।

Any other tree would not have been able to endure the tight hold of the creeper except the poetess' casuarina tree. That's why it is a special tree to the poetess.

"But gallantly The giant wears the scarf" বিশাল আকৃতির গাছটি গর্বের সাথে/সাহসিকতার সাথে মাফলারটি (লতাগাছটি) পড়ে আছে।

Here the casuarina tree is compared with a giant because of its huge size. This is an example of metaphor.

"...flowers are hung / In crimson clusters all the boughs among" ক্যাজুয়রিনা গাছের ডালগুলি থেকে টকটকে লাল ফুলগুলি স্তবকে স্তবকে (থোকায় থোকায়) ঝুলে রয়েছে।

Dark-red coloured flowers are hanging from the branches of the tree in groups.

"Where on all day are gathered bird and bee" যেখানে সারাদিন ধরে পাখিরা এবং মৌমাছিরা এসে জড়ো হয়েছে।

Here the poetess wants to mean that dark red (crimson) flowers are hanging in bunches from the branches of the tree. Birds and bees are seen gathering around the casuarina tree in order to collect honey/manna from the tree.

"And oft at nights the garden overflows / With one sweet song that seems to have no close" কবি বলতে চেয়েছেন যে বাগান থেকে যে মিষ্টিমধুর গান ভেসে আসছে সেটি অন্তহীন, এই গানে কোন থামালে না।

Here the poetess means to suggest that a melodious and mellifluous music is coming from every nook and corner of the garden. The song, the poetess thinks, seems to be never ending. The eternal music of the bird and the bee reminds the reader of Keats' Nightingale in "Ode to a Nightingale" and Skylark in Shelley's "Ode to a Skylark". To the poetess, the song is a source of infinite and immense pleasure. It also reminds one of the sweet song of the girl in Wordsworth's "The Solitary Reaper" - "O listen! for the Vale profound / Is overflowing with the sound."

"Sung darkling from our tree, while men repose" পাখিরা গান করছে এবং অন্ধকারের মধ্য থেকে গাছে বসে থাকা পাখিদের এবং মৌমাছিদের গান কবি শুনতে পারছেন।

The poet can hear the song of the birds and bees. Sitting on the branches of the trees, the dark 'in full throated ease' ("Ode to a Nightingale"). The word 'darkling' also reminds a perceptive reader of Keats' phrase 'darkling I listen' in "Ode to a Nightingale".
