1. INTRODUCTION 

The Direct Method is a popular system of teaching the English language. It is also known as the Natural Method or the Reform Method. This method was developed in the late nineteenth century. It came as a strong reaction against the traditional Grammar-Translation Method. The main goal of this method is to teach English directly to the learner. It creates a direct link between English words and real-world ideas. It copies the natural way a child learns their mother tongue.

 2.  PRINCIPLES AND PHILOSOPHY

 The Direct Method follows very clear rules in the classroom. English is the only language used by the teacher and the students. The use of the mother tongue is completely forbidden. Translation from the native language is never allowed. Listening and speaking skills are taught first. Reading and writing skills are taught later. The basic unit of teaching is a complete sentence, not an isolated word. Grammar is not taught through rules and definitions. Students learn grammar inductively by practicing patterns and examples.

The Direct Method offers many strong benefits for language learners. It helps students speak English fluently and naturally. Students learn to think in English without translating words in their heads. Listening comprehension improves very quickly in this active environment. Pronunciation, accent, and intonation become much better through continuous oral practice. Lessons are dynamic, lively, and interesting for young learners. The direct connection between words and objects helps students remember vocabulary for a long time. It builds great self-confidence in learners for real-life conversations. Students actively participate in every lesson instead of sitting silently. 

5. DEMERITS AND LIMITATIONS

 The Direct Method also has several practical disadvantages. It is very hard to use in large and overcrowded classrooms. The teacher cannot give personal attention to every single student. Abstract words like honesty or courage are difficult to explain without translation. It requires teachers who are highly skilled and speak English fluently. Reading and writing skills are often neglected in this approach. Formal grammar accuracy may suffer because rules are not clearly taught. Preparing visual aids and demonstration materials takes a lot of time and money. Weak students may feel lost or nervous without the support of their native language.
