Even a few days back, one could see the forlorn dispossessed people, spending their days and nights, huddled together like herds of cattle and goats in the shelter of a railway platform.
এমনকি কয়েকদিন আগেও দেখা যেত, সহায়-সম্বলহীন নিরাশ্রয় মানুষগুলো রেলওয়ে প্ল্যাটফর্মের আশ্রয়ে গরু-ছাগলের পালের মতো গাদাগাদি করে দিনরাত কাটাচ্ছে।
Mallika's family had a place, the length of one spread mattress.
মল্লিকার পরিবারের জন্য একটি জায়গা ছিল, যার আয়তন মাত্র বিছিয়ে রাখা একটা মাদুরের সমান।
Everything, everyone was squeezed there-Mallika, her husband Bhushan, their two and half-year-old son Khokon and a widowed sister-in-law Asha, tin suitcases, beddings and bundles, pots and pans.
সবকিছু, সবাই সেখানে ঠাসাঠাসি করে ছিল—মল্লিকা, তার স্বামী ভূষণ, তাদের আড়াই বছরের ছেলে খোকন এবং বিধবা ননদ আশা, টিনের স্যুটকেস, বিছানাপত্র ও বোঁচকা, হাঁড়ি-পাতিল।
Another day had begun.

Perhaps, the sun had no option but to come up, chasing away night's shadows or else why would the darkness give way to light in this cruel, ugly world?
হয়তো রাতের অন্ধকার তাড়িয়ে সূর্য ওঠার কোনো বিকল্প ছিল না, তা না হলে এই নিষ্ঠুর, কুৎসিত পৃথিবীতে অন্ধকার কেন আলোকে পথ ছেড়ে দেবে?
Today, Mallika's family had nothing to eat, the child had been whimpering since early morning.
আজ মল্লিকার পরিবারের কাছে খাওয়ার মতো কিছুই ছিল না, বাচ্চাটা ভোরবেলা থেকেই ঘ্যানঘ্যান করে কাঁদছিল।
He drowsed as the day advanced.
বেলা বাড়ার সাথে সাথে সে ঝিমিয়ে পড়ে।
He howled and dropped off from time to time.
মাঝে মাঝে সে চিৎকার করে কাঁদছিল আর ঘুমিয়ে পড়ছিল।
Mallika lifted her eyes to behold Pramatha of 'Help and Welfare Society', people helping the refugees, accompanied by Ramlochan descend on their mattress kingdom.
মল্লিকা চোখ তুলে দেখল, 'হেল্প অ্যান্ড ওয়েলফেয়ার সোসাইটি'-র প্রমথ, যারা উদ্বাস্তুদের সাহায্য করে, সে রামলোচনকে সাথে নিয়ে তাদের মাদুর-সাম্রাজ্যে এসে উপস্থিত হয়েছে।
Asha covered her head, pulling the sari close to her forehead.
আশা তার শাড়ির আঁচল টেনে কপাল পর্যন্ত ঘোমটা দিয়ে মাথা ঢেকে নিল।
Bhushan's temperature had come down.
ভূষণের গায়ের জ্বর কিছুটা কমেছে।
Wrapped in folds of the kantha he was dozing.
কাঁথা গায়ে জড়িয়ে সে ঝিমোচ্ছিল।
He wasn't bothered by Pramatha's appearance.
প্রমথর আবির্ভাবে তার কোনো ভ্রূক্ষেপ ছিল না।
So many had come and gone-men from societies, associations, newspaper offices.
এমন কত মানুষ এসেছে আর গেছে—সোসাইটির লোক, অ্যাসোসিয়েশনের লোক, সংবাদপত্রের অফিসের লোক।
It had made no difference to their lives.
এতে তাদের জীবনে কোনো পরিবর্তন আসেনি।
Mallika and her family didn't rely on the government, but they had placed some hope on these men.
মল্লিকা এবং তার পরিবার সরকারের ওপর নির্ভর করত না, তবে তারা এই মানুষগুলোর ওপর কিছুটা আশা রেখেছিল।
They had continued to live one hell of a life in the station, knowing fully well they were about to be turned out of the place.
তারা খুব ভালোভাবেই জানত যে তাদের এই জায়গা থেকে তাড়িয়ে দেওয়া হবে, তা সত্ত্বেও তারা স্টেশনে এক নরকযন্ত্রণার জীবন কাটানো চালিয়ে যাচ্ছিল।
'How's the fever?'
'জ্বর কেমন?'
'It's come down, but will come back again, with all the shivering, for sure.'
'কমেছে, তবে নিশ্চয়ই আবার কাঁপুনি দিয়ে আসবে।'
It was always Mallika who replied to Pramatha's queries.
প্রমথর প্রশ্নের উত্তর সবসময় মল্লিকাই দিত।
In talk, dress and demeanour Pramatha gave the impression of a middle-aged pater familias, that was why they resented his solicitations.
কথাবার্তা, পোশাক এবং আচার-আচরণে প্রমথকে একজন মধ্যবয়সী পরিবারের কর্তার মতো মনে হতো, আর সে কারণেই তারা তার এই অযাচিত সহানুভূতিতে বিরক্ত হতো।
The man had done nothing for them although this was the fourth time he had come to enquire after their well being and demonstrate his concern.
লোকটি তাদের জন্য কিছুই করেনি, যদিও এ নিয়ে চতুর্থবার সে তাদের খবরাখবর নিতে এবং নিজের উদ্বেগ দেখাতে এসেছে।
Now they were on the point of starvation.
এখন তারা প্রায় অনাহারের দ্বারপ্রান্তে।
Mallika didn't mince words when she bluntly said. "We are relying on you and you are doing nothing for us!"
মল্লিকা কোনো রাখঢাক না করেই স্পষ্ট ভাষায় বলল, "আমরা আপনার ওপর নির্ভর করে আছি আর আপনি আমাদের জন্য কিছুই করছেন না!"
'We are really at sea ... how many people can we take care of?
'আমরা সত্যিই দিশেহারা... কতজনের দায়িত্ব আমরা নিতে পারি?
Now ... if you don't shape up, don't try to help yourselves then...'
এখন... আপনারা যদি নিজেরাই নিজেদের গুছিয়ে না নেন, নিজেদের সাহায্য করার চেষ্টা না করেন তবে...'
'Shape up, did you say? Should we try to?
'গুছিয়ে নেওয়ার কথা বললেন? আমাদের কি সেটা করার চেষ্টা করা উচিত?
If that is what is needed then I'm ready to stand up straight and behave responsibly.
যদি সেটাই প্রয়োজন হয়, তবে আমি সোজা হয়ে দাঁড়াতে এবং দায়িত্বশীলের মতো আচরণ করতে প্রস্তুত।
Here I am throwing my hands about, dancing and screaming for attention. What more is left?'
এই তো আমি হাত-পা ছুঁড়ে, নেচে-কুঁদে চিৎকার করে দৃষ্টি আকর্ষণের চেষ্টা করছি। আর কী বাকি আছে?'
Her words carried a sharp sting.
তার কথার মধ্যে একটা তীব্র হুল ফোটানো তীক্ষ্ণতা ছিল।
But the agony of the hapless lot never find a voice, signs of anger of humiliation never show on their faces.
কিন্তু এই হতভাগ্য মানুষগুলোর যন্ত্রণা কখনোই ভাষা পায় না, অপমান বা রাগের চিহ্ন কখনোই তাদের মুখে ফুটে ওঠে না।
Pramatha found this mode of the destitutes rather terrifying at first; it seemed to him as if they were turning their backs on him in contempt, saying, 'Don't talk down to us, flood us with platitudes.
প্রমথর কাছে প্রথমে এই নিঃস্ব মানুষগুলোর এই ভঙ্গি বেশ ভীতিকর মনে হয়েছিল; তার মনে হচ্ছিল যেন তারা অবজ্ঞায় তার দিকে পিঠ ফিরিয়ে বলছে, 'আমাদের ছোট করে কথা বলবেন না, বড় বড় কথার বন্যায় ভাসাবেন না।
Tell us instead what we have to do, tell us what is the way out.'
তার বদলে আমাদের বলুন কী করতে হবে, বলুন মুক্তির উপায় কী।'
Pramatha was a realist; he was unusually aware.
প্রমথ ছিল বাস্তববাদী; সে ছিল অস্বাভাবিক রকমের সচেতন।
His head reeled, his heart thumped unnecessarily, unreasonably when he tried to work things out.
যখনই সে বিষয়গুলোর একটা সুরাহা করার চেষ্টা করত, তার মাথা ঘুরত, অকারণে এবং অযৌক্তিকভাবে তার বুক ধড়ফড় করত।
Blowing hot and cold, he sought to calm Mallika down.
নরম-গরম কথা বলে সে মল্লিকাকে শান্ত করার চেষ্টা করল।
'What can I say... you have come in waves, flooding the city. The government is unable to cope.
'কী আর বলব... আপনারা দলে দলে স্রোতের মতো এসে শহর ভাসিয়ে দিয়েছেন। সরকার সামাল দিতে পারছে না।
How many people can we look after?
আমরা কতজনের দেখাশোনা করতে পারি?
It's all God's handiwork, like a deluge or an earthquake.
এ সবই ঈশ্বরের লীলা, ঠিক যেন বন্যা বা ভূমিকম্পের মতো।
It is God who makes poor, insignificant men like us do what he wants.
ঈশ্বরই আমাদের মতো দরিদ্র, নগণ্য মানুষদের দিয়ে তার যা ইচ্ছা তাই করিয়ে নেন।
Or else why should we get perturbed about the sufferings of women like you and come running to help?'
তা না হলে আপনাদের মতো মহিলাদের কষ্ট দেখে আমরা কেন বিচলিত হবো আর সাহায্য করতে ছুটে আসব?'
'Why take the name of that disgraceful being?'
'সেই নির্লজ্জের (ঈশ্বরের) নাম নিচ্ছেন কেন?'
Pramatha kept his cool.
প্রমথ নিজেকে শান্ত রাখল।
Leaving aside the badinage he came to serious business.
হাসি-ঠাট্টা বা হালকা কথা বাদ দিয়ে সে আসল কাজের কথায় এল।
'Look, we have no control over the situation but we can find you a
'দেখুন, পরিস্থিতির ওপর আমাদের কোনো হাত নেই, তবে আমরা আপনাদের জন্য একটা...
job if you wish. You'll earn enough.'
কাজ খুঁজে দিতে পারি, যদি আপনি চান। আপনি যথেষ্ট উপার্জন করতে পারবেন।'
'Why don't you find my husband a job? He's suffering from malaria fever. He'll be alright in a day or two. He can join work after taking a couple of days rest.'
'আমার স্বামীর জন্য একটা কাজ খুঁজে দিচ্ছেন না কেন? সে ম্যালেরিয়ায় ভুগছে। এক-দু'দিনের মধ্যেই সে ঠিক হয়ে যাবে। দু'দিন বিশ্রাম নেওয়ার পরই সে কাজে যোগ দিতে পারবে।'
Bhushan raised his blood-shot eyes and looked at them.
ভূষণ তার রক্তবর্ণ চোখ তুলে তাদের দিকে তাকাল।
Pramatha made sounds of regret. 'There are no jobs for men; everywhere men are out of work. But there are some jobs still available for women.'
প্রমথ আক্ষেপের শব্দ করল। 'পুরুষদের জন্য কোনো কাজ নেই; সব জায়গায় পুরুষরা বেকার। কিন্তু মহিলাদের জন্য এখনও কিছু কাজ পাওয়া যাচ্ছে।'
'Will you find something for my sister-in-law too? We can both work and earn.'
'আমার ননদের জন্যও কি কিছু খুঁজে দেবেন? আমরা দুজনেই কাজ করে রোজগার করতে পারি।'
Pramatha felt happy to kill two birds with one stone. 'I think I could', he said.
এক ঢিলে দুই পাখি মারতে পেরে প্রমথ মনে মনে খুশি হলো। 'আমার মনে হয় আমি পারব,' সে বলল।
Mallika glanced at her skeleton-like child. She spoke to Bhushan softly, drawing her sari over her head. 'There's no other way for us, is there? What do you say?'
মল্লিকা তার কঙ্কালসার বাচ্চাটার দিকে একবার তাকাল। শাড়ির আঁচল মাথায় টেনে সে ভূষণকে নিচু স্বরে বলল, 'আমাদের তো আর কোনো উপায় নেই, তাই না? তুমি কী বলো?'
Bhushan didn't utter a word, he sat opening and closing his fists.
ভূষণ কোনো কথা বলল না, সে বসে বসে তার হাতের মুঠো খুলছিল আর বন্ধ করছিল।
'Oh God, even this was in my fate!' Mallika cried out.
'হে ভগবান, এটাও আমার কপালে ছিল!' মল্লিকা কেঁদে উঠল।
Mallika had called out to God out of habit. There was nothing in her voice to indicate she was making a plea. It seemed she was dismissing him out of her mind, taking his name for one last time.
মল্লিকা অভ্যাসবশতই ভগবানকে ডেকেছিল। তার গলার স্বরে এমন কিছু ছিল না যা দেখে মনে হতে পারে যে সে কোনো আকুতি জানাচ্ছে। বরং মনে হচ্ছিল, শেষবারের মতো তার নাম নিয়ে সে তাকে নিজের মন থেকে বিদায় করে দিচ্ছে।
'Okay, I'll do whatever you say. Dance naked if you ask me to. But you'll find a room for us first, won't you? An enclosed space and spot of milk for the child, otherwise he'll die.'
'ঠিক আছে, আপনি যা বলবেন আমি তাই করব। আপনি বললে উলঙ্গ হয়ে নাচব। কিন্তু আপনি আগে আমাদের জন্য একটা ঘরের ব্যবস্থা করবেন, তাই না? একটা ঘেরা জায়গা আর বাচ্চাটার জন্য একটু দুধ, তা না হলে ও মরে যাবে।'
Pramatha calculated in his mind. Calmly he said, 'You'll get a room to stay and some milk too. Take this money as advance, it'll cover the room rent and the price of milk.'
প্রমথ মনে মনে হিসাব কষল। শান্ত গলায় সে বলল, 'আপনারা থাকার জন্য একটা ঘর আর কিছুটা দুধও পাবেন। এই টাকাটা অগ্রিম হিসেবে রাখুন, এতে ঘরের ভাড়া আর দুধের দাম হয়ে যাবে।'
'You better give straightaway. I'll take you to your room in the afternoon.'
'আপনি বরং এখনই একটা রসিদ দিয়ে দিন। আমি বিকেলে আপনাদের ঘরে নিয়ে যাব।'
Smiling to himself, Pramatha lit a cigarette. He was not chewing betel leaf; he felt bad about it. Blowing a ring of smoke he said,
মনে মনে হাসতে হাসতে প্রমথ একটা সিগারেট ধরাল। সে পান চিবোচ্ছিল না; এর জন্য তার কিছুটা খারাপ লাগছিল। একরাশ ধোঁয়া রিংয়ের মতো ছাড়তে ছাড়তে সে বলল,
'Ramlochan, go and buy a litre of milk, then stay here and look after these people. There are plenty of bad characters about the place, waiting to pounce on them. Remain vigilant'
'রামলোচন, গিয়ে এক লিটার দুধ কিনে আনো, তারপর এখানে থেকে এই মানুষগুলোর দেখাশোনা করো। এই জায়গায় অনেক খারাপ চরিত্রের লোক আছে, যারা এদের ওপর ঝাঁপিয়ে পড়ার অপেক্ষায় আছে। সতর্ক থেকো।'
All of a sudden Mallika threw herself on the ground. Then hurtling forward and taking hold of Pramatha's feet, nicely ensconced in a pair of shiny polished shoes,
হঠাৎ করেই মল্লিকা মাটিতে লুটিয়ে পড়ল। তারপর সামনের দিকে ঝাঁপিয়ে পড়ে চকচকে পালিশ করা জুতোর মধ্যে থাকা প্রমথর পা দুটো জড়িয়ে ধরে...
, she sobbed. 'Are you a man or a God?'
, সে ফুঁপিয়ে কেঁদে উঠল। 'আপনি কি মানুষ, নাকি দেবতা?'
A young man of twenty or twenty two and a girl of the same age came up to her, almost as soon as Pramatha left.
প্রমথ চলে যাওয়ার প্রায় সাথে সাথেই কুড়ি-বাইশ বছরের এক যুবক এবং একই বয়সের একটি মেয়ে তার কাছে এগিয়ে এল।
They looked like college students.
তাদের দেখে কলেজের ছাত্র-ছাত্রী বলে মনে হচ্ছিল।
'Did he say he'll get you a job?' The boy asked.
'উনি কি বলেছেন যে উনি আপনাকে একটা কাজ জুটিয়ে দেবেন?' ছেলেটি জিজ্ঞেস করল।
'Yes.'
'হ্যাঁ।'
'The man is evil, do you know what kind of a job he'll find you?'
'লোকটা খুব খারাপ, আপনি কি জানেন সে আপনাকে কী ধরনের কাজ জোগাড় করে দেবে?'
The two went on to explain the nature of the job to Mallika for ten whole minutes.
তারা দুজনে মিলে পুরো দশ মিনিট ধরে মল্লিকাকে সেই কাজের ধরন সম্পর্কে বোঝাতে লাগল।
Ramlochan had brought her a pawa of hot milk in the midst of their lecture.
তাদের এই বক্তৃতার মাঝখানেই রামলোচন তার জন্য এক পোয়া গরম দুধ নিয়ে এসেছিল।
While they talked, Mallika, taking out a shell shaped spoon from within the folds of the kantha, started to feed the child on her lap, cooling the milk with puffs of breath.
তারা যখন কথা বলছিল, তখন মল্লিকা কাঁথার ভাঁজ থেকে ঝিনুকের মতো দেখতে একটা চামচ বের করে, ফুঁ দিয়ে দুধ ঠান্ডা করে তার কোলে থাকা বাচ্চাটিকে খাওয়াতে শুরু করল।
'If you know the man is a scoundrel why don't you take him to the police?' she asked.
'আপনারা যদি জানেনই যে লোকটা একটা বদমাশ, তবে তাকে পুলিশের কাছে নিয়ে যাচ্ছেন না কেন?' সে জিজ্ঞেস করল।
"The police won't arrest him," the boy replied.
'পুলিশ তাকে গ্রেফতার করবে না,' ছেলেটি উত্তর দিল।
'They will if you complain,' the girl piped in.
'আপনি অভিযোগ করলে তারা করবে,' মেয়েটি মাঝখান থেকে বলে উঠল।
Mallika smiled in her grief.
মল্লিকা নিজের দুঃখের মাঝেই হাসল।
'Complain? How can I? Sister, you don't know how this world runs.
'অভিযোগ? আমি কী করে করব? দিদিভাই, এই দুনিয়া কীভাবে চলে তা তুমি জানো না।
How can I kick up a fuss when there is nothing I can find fault with?
আমি যখন কোনো দোষই ধরতে পারছি না, তখন কী নিয়ে হট্টগোল করব?
He wants to find me work, make me comfortable.
সে আমাকে কাজ খুঁজে দিতে চায়, আমার আরামের ব্যবস্থা করতে চায়।
How can I grumble when there is nothing to moan about?'
যখন আক্ষেপ করার মতো কিছুই নেই, তখন আমি কীভাবে বিরক্তি প্রকাশ করব?'
Mallika pushed the child away from her lap and onto the ground.
মল্লিকা বাচ্চাটাকে কোল থেকে সরিয়ে মাটিতে ঠেলে দিল।
It seemed the child was the source of her fury and disgust.
মনে হচ্ছিল যেন এই বাচ্চাটিই তার রাগ আর বিরক্তির উৎস।
Her eyes were glittering.
তার চোখ দুটো জ্বলজ্বল করছিল।
'Do you think I don't know what villainy is? Can't make out who's honest and who's treacherous?
'আপনারা কি মনে করেন আমি জানি না শয়তানি কী? কে সৎ আর কে বিশ্বাসঘাতক, তা কি আমি বুঝতে পারি না?
He puts on an act of sincerity, but how can he hide the look in his eyes!
সে আন্তরিকতার ভান করে, কিন্তু সে তার চোখের দৃষ্টি কীভাবে লুকোবে!
We are living with our backs to the wall.
আমরা একেবারে দেওয়ালে পিঠ ঠেকে যাওয়া অবস্থায় বেঁচে আছি।
We would have shown him the door, kicked him in the teeth, had it been otherwise.
অবস্থা যদি অন্যরকম হতো, তবে আমরা তাকে দরজা দেখিয়ে দিতাম, তার মুখে লাথি মারতাম।
But we are helpless, what can we do?'
কিন্তু আমরা অসহায়, আমরা কী করতে পারি?'
The boy and the girl remained silent.
ছেলেটি এবং মেয়েটি চুপ করে রইল।
Ramlochan, who had been watching them from afar, went aside now and fetched a police officer.
রামলোচন, যে এতক্ষণ দূর থেকে তাদের লক্ষ্য করছিল, এবার একপাশে গিয়ে একজন পুলিশ অফিসারকে ডেকে আনল।
'We are student volunteers,' the boy offered.
'আমরা ছাত্র স্বেচ্ছাসেবক,' ছেলেটি জানাল।
The police officer left after taking down the names and the addresses.
পুলিশ অফিসারটি তাদের নাম ও ঠিকানা লিখে নেওয়ার পর চলে গেল।
The police officer left after taking down the names and the addresses of the students and warning Mallika not to be duped by all and sundry.
পুলিশ অফিসার ছাত্রছাত্রীদের নাম ও ঠিকানা লিখে নিয়ে এবং মল্লিকাকে যাকে-তাকে বিশ্বাস করে প্রতারিত না হওয়ার জন্য সতর্ক করে দিয়ে চলে গেল।
'Be on guard, he advised.
'সতর্ক থাকবেন,' সে উপদেশ দিল।
'How can we be wary when our stomachs are empty, Mallika derided, but the police officer had no time for her words.
'পেট খালি থাকলে আমরা কীভাবে সতর্ক থাকব,' মল্লিকা বিদ্রূপ করে বলল, কিন্তু পুলিশ অফিসারের তার কথা শোনার সময় ছিল না।
The students had already left and Ramlochan was found still seated in the corner of the platform at some distance from her.
ছাত্রছাত্রীরা ততক্ষণে চলে গিয়েছিল এবং রামলোচনকে প্ল্যাটফর্মের এক কোণে তার থেকে কিছুটা দূরে তখনও বসে থাকতে দেখা গেল।
Perhaps he was keeping an eye on them, making sure others didn't win them over.
হয়তো সে তাদের ওপর নজর রাখছিল, যাতে অন্য কেউ এসে তাদের মন জয় করে না নেয়।
Mallika turned to Asha. 'Thakurjhi, you are the cause of our ruin!
মল্লিকা আশার দিকে ফিরল। 'ঠাকুরঝি, তুমিই আমাদের সর্বনাশের কারণ!
Get to work! Bring us some relief.'
কাজে লেগে পড়ো! আমাদের কিছুটা স্বস্তি এনে দাও।'
Asha shivered. 'I can't not even if I have to die.'
আশা শিউরে উঠল। 'আমি পারব না, মরে গেলেও না।'
Mallika wiped away her tears. 'Am I talking of dying? Do you think I fear death? I would be ready to die if that was needed to keep my child alive.'
মল্লিকা নিজের চোখের জল মুছল। 'আমি কি মরার কথা বলছি? তুমি কি ভাবো আমি মৃত্যুকে ভয় পাই? আমার সন্তানকে বাঁচিয়ে রাখার জন্য যদি মরতে হয়, তবে আমি মরতেও প্রস্তুত।'
She didn't talk about Bhushan, whether he ought to remain alive or not.
সে ভূষণের কথা বলল না, তার বেঁচে থাকা উচিত কি না।
She had fairly straightforwardly asserted that she was not prepared to die for her husband.
সে বেশ স্পষ্টভাবেই জানিয়ে দিল যে সে তার স্বামীর জন্য মরতে প্রস্তুত নয়।
She wouldn't allow herself to be entrapped by Pramatha either.
সে নিজেকে প্রমথর ফাঁদেও পড়তে দেবে না।
But she was ready for both if the child had to be saved.
কিন্তু বাচ্চাটাকে বাঁচাতে হলে সে দুটোর জন্যই প্রস্তুত ছিল।
She knew her death wouldn't keep the child alive and had therefore opted to give in to Pramatha's machinations.
সে জানত তার মৃত্যু বাচ্চাটাকে বাঁচিয়ে রাখতে পারবে না, আর তাই সে প্রমথর চক্রান্তের কাছে নতিস্বীকার করার পথই বেছে নিয়েছিল।

Suddenly Mallika saw red. Her blood came surging up to her head.

Mallika looked around. Pramatha had only lost consciousness, he wasn't dead.

Couldn't she finish him off, once and for all?

Asha was shaking in fear at the terrible picture Mallika made.

'Bou,' she uttered.

Mallika gave her a big smile. 'I've found a way out Thakurjhi-the final solution...'
মল্লিকা তাকে দেখে একগাল হাসল। 'আমি একটা উপায় খুঁজে পেয়েছি ঠাকুরঝি—একেবারে চূড়ান্ত সমাধান...'
Asha grew more frightened. 'Are you out your mind, Bou?'
আশা আরও ভয় পেয়ে গেল। 'তোমার কি মাথা খারাপ হয়ে গেছে, বৌদি?'
'Perhaps I am... but I've found an excellent way out.
'হয়তো তাই... তবে আমি একটা চমৎকার উপায় বের করেছি।
That gangster! He thought he had got me to carry on his infamous goings on.
ওই গুন্ডাটা! সে ভেবেছিল আমাকে দিয়ে তার কুৎসিত কাজকারবার চালিয়ে নেবে।
What did he take me for? Am I physically weak because I'm a woman?'
সে আমাকে কী ভেবেছিল? আমি মেয়ে বলে কি শারীরিকভাবে দুর্বল?'
'Calm yourself down, Bou - sit down, I beg you.'

'Have you cooked, Thakurjhi?' Mallika asked settling down.

'Have you all eaten... let me have some food, my stomach's churning violently in hunger.'
'তোমরা সবাই খেয়েছ... আমাকে একটু খেতে দাও, খিদের চোটে আমার পেট জ্বলছে।'
She gave a hearty laugh. 'We'll never be hungry again, Thakurjhi never, ever...

My son will have milk four times a day...

I'll go to the railway station every evening in my frayed sari, the sharks will come again to pick me up, for sure...'
আমি রোজ সন্ধ্যায় আমার ওই ছেঁড়া শাড়িটা পরে রেলওয়ে স্টেশনে যাব, ওই হাঙরগুলো ঠিক আমাকে তুলে নিতে আবার আসবে...'
And lowering her voice Mallika added, 'But this time I'll be carrying a sharp knife with me, you understand, Thakurjhi. I'll hide it so that no one finds out...'
আর গলার স্বর নামিয়ে মল্লিকা যোগ করল, 'কিন্তু এবার আমার সাথে একটা ধারালো ছুরি থাকবে, বুঝলে ঠাকুরঝি। আমি ওটা লুকিয়ে রাখব যাতে কেউ টের না পায়...'
