Strong Roots: Line by Line Bengali Meaning
An excerpt from 'Wings of Fire' by Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.
English: I normally ate with my mother, sitting on the floor of the kitchen.
Bengali: আমি সাধারণত আমার মায়ের সঙ্গেই খেতাম, রান্নাঘরের মেঝের উপর বসে।
English: She would place a banana leaf before me, on which she then ladled rice and aromatic sambar, a variety of sharp, home-made pickle and a dollop of fresh coconut chutney.
Bengali: তিনি আমার সামনে একটি কলার পাতা পেতে দিতেন, যার ওপর তিনি হাতা করে ঢেলে দিতেন ভাত এবং সুগন্ধি সাম্বার, এক ধরনের ঝাঁঝালো ঘরোয়া আচার এবং এক দলা টাটকা নারকেলের চাটনি।
English: The Shiva temple, which made Rameswaram so famous to pilgrims, was about a ten-minute walk from our house.
Bengali: শিব মন্দিরটি, যা রামেশ্বরমকে তীর্থযাত্রীদের কাছে এত বিখ্যাত করে তুলেছিল, সেটি আমাদের বাড়ি থেকে প্রায় দশ মিনিটের হাঁটা পথ ছিল।
English: Our locality was predominantly Muslim, but there were quite a lot of Hindu families too, living amicably with their Muslim neighbours.
Bengali: আমাদের এলাকাটি ছিল প্রধানত মুসলিম অধ্যুষিত, কিন্তু সেখানে প্রচুর হিন্দু পরিবারও ছিল, যারা তাদের মুসলিম প্রতিবেশীদের সঙ্গে অত্যন্ত বন্ধুত্বপূর্ণভাবে বসবাস করত।
English: There was a very old mosque in our locality where my father would take me for evening prayers.
Bengali: আমাদের এলাকায় একটি খুব পুরোনো মসজিদ ছিল যেখানে আমার বাবা আমাকে সন্ধ্যাবেলার প্রার্থনার (নামাজের) জন্য নিয়ে যেতেন।
English: I had not the faintest idea of the meaning of the Arabic prayers chanted, but I was totally convinced that they reached God.
Bengali: উচ্চারিত আরবি প্রার্থনাগুলোর অর্থ সম্পর্কে আমার বিন্দুমাত্র ধারণা ছিল না, কিন্তু আমার এই দৃঢ় বিশ্বাস ছিল যে সেগুলো ঈশ্বরের কাছে পৌঁছায়।
English: When my father came out of the mosque after the prayers, people of different religions would be sitting outside, waiting for him.
Bengali: প্রার্থনার পর যখন আমার বাবা মসজিদ থেকে বেরিয়ে আসতেন, তখন বিভিন্ন ধর্মের মানুষ তাঁর জন্য বাইরে বসে অপেক্ষা করত।
English: Many of them offered bowls of water to my father, who would dip his fingertips in them and say a prayer.
Bengali: তাদের মধ্যে অনেকেই বাবার দিকে জলের বাটি বাড়িয়ে ধরত, আর বাবা তাঁর আঙুলের ডগা তাতে ডুবিয়ে একটি প্রার্থনা পড়তেন।
English: This water was then carried home for invalids.
Bengali: এই জলটুকু তারপর অসুস্থ বা পঙ্গু ব্যক্তিদের জন্য বাড়িতে নিয়ে যাওয়া হতো।
English: I also remember people visiting our home to offer thanks after being cured.
Bengali: সুস্থ হয়ে ওঠার পর মানুষেরা ধন্যবাদ জানাতে আমাদের বাড়িতে আসত, সেটাও আমার মনে পড়ে।
English: Father always smiled and asked them to thank Allah, the merciful.
Bengali: বাবা সবসময় হাসতেন এবং তাঁদের বলতেন পরম দয়াময় আল্লাহকে ধন্যবাদ জানাতে।
