The Reward of Honesty / সততার পুরস্কার

English Story:

One sunny afternoon, two friends, Rahul and Suman, were returning home from school. On their way, they saw a large garden full of beautiful, colourful flowers. The boys were attracted by the beauty of the flowers. Unable to resist the temptation, they entered the garden and started plucking some roses.

Suddenly, the owner of the garden saw them. He shouted angrily and chased the boys. Rahul saw the man and immediately fled from the spot to save himself. However, Suman did not run. He stood still with the flowers in his hand, trembling with fear.

The owner caught Suman and asked in surprise, "Your friend ran away. Why didn't you flee?" Suman lowered his head and replied politely, "I have committed a mistake. He who runs away after stealing proves he is a thief and deserves punishment. I am ready to accept my punishment."

The owner was stunned by the little boy's honesty and courage. His anger turned into happiness. He patted Suman’s back and said, "You are a truthful boy." He forgave Suman and told him that he could come and take flowers from the garden whenever he wanted.

Bengali Meaning (বঙ্গানুবাদ):

এক রৌদ্রোজ্জ্বল বিকেলে, দুই বন্ধু, রাহুল এবং সুমন, স্কুল থেকে বাড়ি ফিরছিল। পথে তারা সুন্দর রঙিন ফুলে ভরা একটি বড় বাগান দেখতে পেল। ফুলের সৌন্দর্যে ছেলেরা মুগ্ধ হলো। লোভ সামলাতে না পেরে তারা বাগানে ঢুকল এবং কিছু গোলাপ ফুল ছিঁড়তে শুরু করল।

হঠাৎ বাগানের মালিক তাদের দেখে ফেললেন। তিনি রাগে চিৎকার করলেন এবং ছেলেদের ধাওয়া করলেন। রাহুল লোকটিকে দেখে নিজেকে বাঁচাতে তখনই সেখান থেকে পালিয়ে গেল। কিন্তু সুমন পালাল না। সে ফুল হাতে ভয়ে কাঁপতে কাঁপতে স্থির হয়ে দাঁড়িয়ে রইল।

মালিক সুমনকে ধরলেন এবং অবাক হয়ে জিজ্ঞেস করলেন, "তোমার বন্ধু তো পালিয়ে গেল। তুমি পালালে না কেন?" সুমন মাথা নিচু করে ভদ্রভাবে উত্তর দিল, "আমি ভুল করেছি। চুরি করার পর যে পালিয়ে যায়, সে প্রমাণ করে যে সে চোর এবং তার শাস্তি প্রাপ্য। আমি আমার শাস্তি মেনে নিতে প্রস্তুত।"

মালিক ছোট ছেলেটির সততা এবং সাহস দেখে অবাক হলেন। তাঁর রাগ আনন্দে পরিণত হলো। তিনি সুমনের পিঠ চাপড়ে বললেন, "তুমি একটি সত্যবাদী ছেলে।" তিনি সুমনকে ক্ষমা করে দিলেন এবং বললেন যে সে যখন খুশি এসে বাগান থেকে ফুল নিতে পারে।

Moral: Honesty is the best policy.
