The novel begins by describing humans as unhappy and primitive. It also introduces an electronic book called The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, which gives information about all the planets in the galaxy. Arthur Dent, a simple Englishman, wakes one morning to find that his house will be demolished to build a bypass. He lies down in front of the bulldozer to stop it, but his friend Ford Prefect takes him to the local pub. Suddenly a fleet of spaceships arrives. The Vogons, a rude alien race, announce they will destroy Earth to make room for a hyperspace highway. They blow up the planet, but Arthur and Ford survive because Ford is an alien researcher who knows how to hitchhike on spaceships. The Vogons capture them, force them to listen to awful poetry, and throw them into space. Meanwhile, Zaphod Beeblebrox, the President of the Galaxy, steals a spaceship called the Heart of Gold with his companion Trillian. This ship has an Infinite Improbability Drive that can travel anywhere instantly. By an unlikely coincidence, the ship rescues Arthur and Ford. With a depressed robot named Marvin, they go to a legendary planet called Magrathea, known for building custom-made planets. After surviving a missile attack, they meet Slartibartfast, a Magrathean who explains that Earth was actually a giant computer built to discover the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything. Another supercomputer, Deep Thought, had earlier found the answer to be 42, but the actual question was unknown. Earth was destroyed five minutes before it could complete the calculation. The mice turn out to be superintelligent beings who used humans in the experiment and try to buy Arthur's brain, thinking it contains the question. The group escapes when police die after listening to Marvin's depressing talk. Finally, they leave Magrathea and decide to visit The Restaurant at the End of the Universe.
