 The Value of Honesty

The King and His Three Staff

Once there was a wise king who wished to test the honesty of his three royal staff. He gave each of them a sack and ordered them to fill it with fruits from the royal orchard. The first staff filled his sack sincerely with fresh fruits. The second filled only half with fruits and the other half with different goods. The third one was dishonest and filled the sack mostly with useless things and covered the top layer with fruits to deceive the king. The king then kept each man in a separate room for a month with only the sack they had filled. The first man survived comfortably because he had collected good fruits. The second man survived for only twenty-five days. The third man, who had filled his sack with mostly useless goods, died after seventeen days. The king proved that honesty and sincerity always reward a person, while deceit leads to destruction. Moral: Honesty is the best policy.
