Summary of “The Nun’s Priest’s Tale”

The story begins with a poor old widow who lives a quiet and simple life in her small cottage with her two daughters. She owns only a few animals — three pigs, three cows, a sheep, and some chickens. Among her chickens is a proud and beautiful rooster named Chanticleer, which means “sings clearly” in French. Chanticleer is known for his wonderful crowing, which is said to be more accurate than any church clock. He is very handsome, with a red crest like coral, a black beak, white nails, and feathers that shine like gold. Because of his beauty and charm, he is admired by all the hens, but his favorite is a lovely hen named Pertelote, whom he truly loves.

One night, while sleeping beside Pertelote and his other hens, Chanticleer has a frightening dream about a red, fox-like beast trying to kill him. When he wakes up in fear, Pertelote scolds him for being scared of a dream. She says that dreams are foolish and caused by illness or indigestion, and she promises to find him some herbs to cure his fear. But Chanticleer disagrees. He tells her many stories about people who had dreams that later came true, proving that dreams can sometimes warn of danger.

After their discussion, Chanticleer praises Pertelote’s beauty, and they lovingly spend the morning together. Later, on a bright May day, Chanticleer feels happy and proud, but suddenly a strange sadness comes over him. That very night, a cunning fox sneaks into the farmyard and hides among the bushes, waiting for a chance to attack. The next day, while Chanticleer is watching a butterfly, the fox approaches him and starts flattering him, saying he has heard of his wonderful singing voice. Chanticleer, flattered and proud, closes his eyes and stretches his neck to sing — at that moment, the fox jumps and grabs him by the throat and runs toward the woods.

When Pertelote and the other hens see what has happened, they cry loudly, and the widow and her daughters run out of the cottage. Their dogs and all the animals chase the fox, creating a huge noise. While being carried away, Chanticleer cleverly tells the fox to turn and shout proudly at his pursuers. When the fox opens his mouth to boast, Chanticleer quickly flies out of his mouth and escapes to a high tree. The fox again tries to flatter him to come down, but Chanticleer refuses, saying he has learned never to trust flattery again.

In the end, the moral of the story is clear: never believe in flattery, because it can lead to danger and harm.
