Antonio, a Venetian merchant, tells his friends about a melancholy that he cannot understand. His friend Bassanio is desperately seeking money to court Portia, a wealthy heiress who resides in the city of Belmont. Bassanio requests Antonio for a loan in order to travel elegantly to Portia’s estate. Antonio consents, but is unable to provide the loan himself because his own money is all invested in a number of trade ships that are still sailing. Antonio advises that Bassanio obtain the loan from one of the city’s moneylenders and use Antonio as the loan’s guarantor. 

In Belmont, Portia shares her sadness over the terms of her father’s will, which requires that she must marry the man who correctly selects one of three caskets. None of Portia’s present suitors please her, and she and her lady-in-waiting, Nerissa, recall a visit paid earlier by Bassanio.

In Venice, Antonio and Bassanio meet Shylock, a Jewish moneylender, for a loan. Shylock harbors a long-standing grudge against Antonio, who has made a habit of insulting Shylock and other Jews for their usury—the practice of lending money at high interest—and who damages their business by offering interest-free loans. Although Antonio refuses to apologize for his behavior, Shylock pretends to be friendly and proposes to lend Bassanio three thousand ducats without interest. Shylock adds that should the loan remain unpaid, he will be entitled to a pound of Antonio’s flesh. Despite Bassanio’s objections, Antonio accepts. In Shylock’s home, his servant Launcelot decides to leave Shylock’s service to join Bassanio, and Shylock’s daughter Jessica plans to elope with Antonio’s friend Lorenzo. That night, the streets of Venice fill with revelers, and Jessica escapes with Lorenzo by disguising herself as his page. After a night of festivity, Bassanio and his friend Gratiano depart for Belmont, where Bassanio intends to win Portia’s hand.

In Belmont, Portia greets the prince of Morocco, who has come to try his luck with the caskets. The prince reads the inscriptions on the three caskets and chooses the gold one, which turns out to be incorrect. 

In Venice, Shylock is furious to learn that his daughter has fled, but rejoices in the rumor that Antonio’s ships have been wrecked and that he will soon claim his bond. In Belmont, the prince of Arragon also visits Portia. He, too, examines the caskets carefully, but selects the silver one, which is also wrong. Bassanio arrives at Portia’s estate, and they declare their love for one another. Despite Portia’s plea that he wait, Bassanio immediately chooses the correct casket made of lead. He and Portia rejoice, and Gratiano admits that he has fallen in love with Nerissa. The couples decide on a double wedding. Portia presents Bassanio with a ring as a token of love and makes him swear never to part with it. They are joined unexpectedly by Lorenzo and Jessica. The celebration, however, is interrupted by the news that Antonio has indeed lost his ships and forfeited his bond to Shylock. Bassanio and Gratiano immediately set out for Venice to save Antonio’s life. After they leave, Portia informs Nerissa that they will travel to Venice disguised as men.

Shylock ignores all pleas to spare Antonio’s life, and a trial begins to decide the matter. The duke of Venice, who presides over the case, announces that he has sent for a legal expert, who turns out to be Portia disguised as a young lawyer. Portia urges Shylock to show mercy, but he remains stubborn and insists that the pound of flesh is rightfully his. Bassanio offers Shylock twice the money, but Shylock demands the bond as written. Portia studies the contract and, finding it lawful, declares that Shylock is entitled to Antonio’s flesh. Shylock praises her wisdom, but as he is about to collect his due, Portia reminds him that he must take it without shedding blood, as the contract mentions nothing about it. Trapped by this reasoning, Shylock agrees to take the money instead, but Portia insists he take the bond or nothing. She then informs him that he is guilty of conspiring against the life of a Venetian, which requires him to surrender half of his wealth to the state and the other half to Antonio. The duke spares Shylock’s life and takes a fine instead of his property. Antonio also waives his share on two conditions: that Shylock must convert to Christianity and bequeath his estate to Lorenzo and Jessica after his death. Shylock accepts and departs.

Bassanio, who does not recognize Portia’s disguise, thanks the young law clerk and is eventually persuaded to give her the ring he had vowed never to part with. Gratiano gives Nerissa, who is also disguised, his ring. The two women return to Belmont, where they find Lorenzo and Jessica expressing their love under the moonlight. When Bassanio and Gratiano arrive the next day, their wives accuse them of breaking their promises. Before the misunderstanding continues, Portia reveals that she was actually the law clerk, and both she and Nerissa reconcile with their husbands. Lorenzo and Jessica rejoice at their inheritance from Shylock, and joyful news arrives that Antonio’s ships have indeed returned safely. The group celebrates its good fortune.
