The Ass in Lion’s Skin
Once upon a time, an ass was wandering in the forest when he found a lion’s skin lying under a tree. An idea struck him. He put on the skin and began to roam around proudly. From a distance, the other animals of the forest mistook him for a real lion. Terrified, they fled in all directions. The ass felt very happy at his success and thought himself the king of the forest. Wherever he went, he enjoyed the false respect of the animals. But one day, he became overexcited. He tried to scare a clever fox who stood calmly before him. To make himself look more frightening, the ass opened his mouth and gave out a loud bray. The moment the fox heard the bray, he laughed and shouted, “This is not a lion, but an ass in disguise!” Soon, the truth spread. All the animals, angry at being deceived, gathered together and killed the foolish ass.
Moral: Pretence and false pride always end in shame and destruction.
