The widow and Lord Budda

The Truth of Death / The Grieving Mother

The Mustard Seed

Once upon a time, there lived a poor widow. She had only one son, whom she loved more than her own life. But one day, the boy suddenly fell ill and died. The poor mother was heart-broken. She could not accept the truth and wept bitterly.

In her grief, she went to Lord Buddha and begged him to bring her son back to life. The Buddha looked at her with compassion and said, “Mother, I can help you. But first, you must bring me a handful of mustard seeds from a house where no one has ever died.”

The woman thought it was an easy task. She went from door to door in the village. Everywhere she asked for mustard seeds, people were ready to give. But when she asked if anyone in that house had ever died, the answer was always the same—“Yes, death has visited our family.”

At last the woman understood the meaning of Buddha’s words. She realised that death is common to all, and no one can escape it. With a calm heart she returned to the Buddha and bowed before him. She accepted the truth of life and gave up her sorrow.

✨ Moral:                 Death is inevitable. We must accept it as a part of human life.
