C. Long Answer Type Questions (LAQ)
Answer within 100 words (5 Marks).
After being released, Jimmy disregarded the beauty of nature and went straight to the depot. He bought a ticket and caught a train. Three hours later, he arrived in a small town. He went to the cafe of his old friend, Mike Dolan. There, he shook hands with Mike and asked for his room key. He went upstairs, unlocked a concealed panel in the wall, and retrieved his suitcase containing his precious burglar's tools.
At Elmore, Jimmy assumed the name Ralph D. Spencer. He noticed that the town lacked a good shoe store, so he opened an exclusive shoe business. Jimmy fared very well at Elmore. His business prospered, and socially he became a success. He made many friends and won the respect of the community. Most importantly, he fell in love with Annabel Adams, the banker's daughter, and they got engaged to be married.
Ralph D. Spencer is the alias Jimmy Valentine adopted in Elmore. The Phoenix is a mythical bird that burns itself to death and is reborn from its own ashes.
The comparison suggests that the criminal identity of "Jimmy Valentine" symbolically died (burnt to ashes) when he fell in love. From those ashes, a new, honest man named Ralph D. Spencer was born. It highlights his complete moral transformation.
Jimmy wrote to his old friend Billy in St. Louis. He offered to gift Billy his kit of burglar’s tools, which were worth over nine hundred dollars.
He wrote this because he had decided to give up his life of crime forever. He was about to marry Annabel Adams and wanted to live an honest life. He felt that the tools were the last link to his past, and by giving them away, he was severing his connection to crime completely.
Annabel Adams made this appeal to her fiancé, Ralph (Jimmy), to save her niece, Agatha. Agatha had been accidentally locked inside the new bank vault.
She was in danger because the vault was airtight, and there was a time lock that could not be opened . Annabel implored Ralph because she loved and trusted him blindly, hoping he could perform a miracle. Ralph then sacrificed his new identity, used his tools, and cracked the safe to save the child.
Ben Price said this to Jimmy Valentine at the end of the story.
Although Ben Price had come to Elmore specifically to arrest Jimmy for previous crimes, he witnessed Jimmy sacrifice his safe future to save a child's life. This noble act proved to Ben Price that Jimmy had truly reformed. Therefore, he pretended not to recognize Jimmy, allowing him to remain free and continue his honest life as Ralph D. Spencer.
