Once occurred to a certain Tsar, that if he always knew the right time to begin everything, একজন নির্দিষ্ট জারের (রাজাধিরাজের) মনে একদিন এই চিন্তা এল যে, যদি সে সব কাজ শুরু করার সঠিক সময়টা সবসময় জানত,
if he knew who were the right people to listen to, and whom to avoid; যদি সে জানত কাদের কথা শোনা উচিত আর কাদের এড়িয়ে চলা উচিত,
and, above all, if he always knew what was the most important thing to do, এবং সবচেয়ে বড় কথা, যদি সে জানত কোন কাজটাই সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ,
he would never fail in anything he might undertake. তাহলে সে যে কোনো কাজে হাত দিলেই কখনও ব্যর্থ হতো না।
And this thought having occurred to him, এবং এই চিন্তা যখন তার মনে উদয় হলো,
he had it proclaimed throughout his kingdom that he would give a great reward সে ঘোষণা দিল তার সমস্ত রাজ্যে যে, সে একটি বড় পুরস্কার দেবে

And learned men came to the Tsar, but they all answered his questions differently. অনেক পণ্ডিত ব্যক্তি জারের কাছে এলেন, কিন্তু প্রত্যেকেই তার প্রশ্নের ভিন্ন ভিন্ন উত্তর দিলেন।
In reply to the first question, some said that to know the right time for every action, প্রথম প্রশ্নের উত্তরে কেউ কেউ বলল যে, প্রতিটি কাজের সঠিক সময় জানতে হলে
one must draw up in advance a table of days, months and years, আগে থেকেই দিন, মাস এবং বছরের একটি তালিকা তৈরি করতে হবে,
and must live strictly according to it. এবং সেই তালিকা অনুযায়ী কঠোরভাবে জীবনযাপন করতে হবে।
Only thus, said they, could everything be done at its proper time. তাদের মতে, কেবল এইভাবেই প্রত্যেক কাজ সঠিক সময়ে করা সম্ভব।
Others declared that it was impossible to decide beforehand the right time for every action; অন্যরা বলল যে, প্রতিটি কাজের সঠিক সময় আগে থেকে নির্ধারণ করা অসম্ভব;
but that, not letting oneself be absorbed in idle pastimes, কিন্তু অলস খেলাধুলা বা নিষ্কর্মা কাজে নিজেকে ব্যস্ত না রেখে,
one should always attend to all that was going on, মানুষের উচিত সর্বদা চারপাশে যা ঘটছে তার দিকে লক্ষ্য রাখা,
and then do what was most needful. এবং তারপর যা সবচেয়ে প্রয়োজনীয়, তাই করা।

It is only magicians who know that;

To the third question, as to what was the most important occupation: some replied that the most important thing in the world was science.

Others said it was skill in warfare; and others, again, that it was religious worship.

Meaning:

All the answers being different, the Tsar agreed with none of them, and gave the reward to none.

The hermit lived in a wood which he never quitted, and he received none but common folk.
সেই সাধু এক জঙ্গলের মধ্যে থাকতেন, তিনি কখনও সেই জায়গা ছাড়তেন না, এবং সাধারণ মানুষ ছাড়া আর কাউকে গ্রহণ করতেন না।

The hermit listened to the Tsar, but answered nothing. He just spat on his hand and recommenced digging.
সাধু সম্রাটের কথা শুনলেন, কিন্তু কিছুই উত্তর দিলেন না। তিনি কেবল নিজের হাতে থুথু ফেললেন এবং আবার মাটি খোঁড়া শুরু করলেন।

"You are tired," said the Tsar, "let me take the spade and work awhile for you."

"Thanks!" said the hermit, and, giving the spade to the Tsar, he sat down on the ground.

When he had dug two beds, the Tsar stopped and repeated his questions.

Meaning:

The hermit again gave no answer, but rose, stretched out his hand for the spade, and said: "Now rest awhile—and let me work a bit."
সাধু আবারও কোনও উত্তর দিলেন না, বরং উঠে দাঁড়িয়ে কোদালটি চাইলেন এবং বললেন, “এখন তুমি একটু বিশ্রাম নাও—আমায় কিছুক্ষণ কাজ করতে দাও।”
Meaning:
সন্ন্যাসী নীরব থেকে রাজাকে বিশ্রাম নিতে বললেন এবং নিজে কাজ করার ইচ্ছে প্রকাশ করলেন।
But the Tsar did not give him the spade, and continued to dig.
কিন্তু সম্রাট তাঁকে কোদালটি দিলেন না, এবং নিজেই খোঁড়া চালিয়ে গেলেন।
Meaning:
রাজা নিজেই কাজ চালিয়ে যেতে লাগলেন, সন্ন্যাসীকে আর কষ্ট দিতে চাইলেন না।
One hour passed, and another. The sun began to sink behind the trees, and the Tsar at last stuck the spade into the ground, and said: "I came to you, wise man, for an answer to my questions. If you can give me none, tell me so, and I will return home."

দিন প্রায় শেষ হয়ে এলো, রাজা দীর্ঘক্ষণ কাজ করলেন, কিন্তু উত্তর না পেয়ে অবশেষে কিছুটা হতাশভাবে বললেন— যদি কিছু না বলেন, তাহলে তিনি ফিরে যাবেন।
"Here comes someone running," said the hermit. "Let us see who it is."

The Tsar turned round, and saw a bearded man come running out of the wood.

The man held his hands pressed against his stomach, and blood was flowing from under them.
লোকটি তার হাত দুটো পেটে চেপে ধরেছিল, আর সেই হাতের নিচ থেকে রক্ত বের হচ্ছিল।
When he reached the Tsar, he fell fainting on the ground moaning feebly.
সে জারের কাছে পৌঁছেই দুর্বলভাবে গোঙাতে গোঙাতে মাটিতে লুটিয়ে পড়ল অজ্ঞান হয়ে।
The Tsar and the hermit unfastened the man's clothing. There was a large wound in his stomach.
জার ও সন্ন্যাসী লোকটির জামাকাপড় খুলে দিলেন। তার পেটে একটি বড় ক্ষত ছিল।
The Tsar washed it as best he could, and bandaged it with his handkerchief and with a towel the hermit had.
জার যতটা সম্ভব ক্ষতটা পরিষ্কার করলেন এবং নিজের রুমাল ও সন্ন্যাসীর তোয়ালে দিয়ে তা বেঁধে দিলেন।
But the blood would not stop flowing, and the Tsar again and again removed the bandage soaked with warm blood, and washed and rebandaged the wound.
কিন্তু রক্তপাত বন্ধ হচ্ছিল না। তাই জার বারবার রক্তে ভেজা ব্যান্ডেজ খুলে ক্ষত ধুয়ে আবার নতুন করে বেঁধে দিচ্ছিলেন।
When at last the blood ceased flowing, the man revived and asked for something to drink.
শেষমেশ যখন রক্তপাত বন্ধ হলো, লোকটি জ্ঞান ফিরে পেল এবং কিছু পান করার জন্য চাইল।
The Tsar brought fresh water and gave it to him.
জার তাজা পানি এনে তাকে পান করতে দিলেন।
Meanwhile the sun had set, and it had become cool.

So the Tsar, with the hermit's help, carried the wounded man into the hut and laid him on the bed.
তাই জার, সন্ন্যাসীর সাহায্যে আহত মানুষটিকে কুঁড়েঘরের ভেতরে নিয়ে গিয়ে খাটের ওপর শুইয়ে দিলেন।
Lying on the bed the man closed his eyes and was quiet; but the Tsar was so tired with his walk and with the work he had done, that he crouched down on the threshold, and also fell asleep—so soundly that he slept all through the short summer night.

সকালে ঘুম ভাঙার পর কিছুক্ষণ তিনি বুঝতেই পারলেন না তিনি কোথায় আছেন, কিংবা সেই অচেনা দাড়িওয়ালা মানুষটি কে, যে খাটে শুয়ে উজ্জ্বল চোখে তার দিকে একদৃষ্টিতে তাকিয়ে আছে।
"Forgive me!" said the bearded man in a weak voice, when he saw that the Tsar was awake and was looking at him.
"আমাকে ক্ষমা করুন!" দুর্বল কণ্ঠে বলল দাড়িওয়ালা লোকটি, যখন সে দেখল জারের ঘুম ভেঙেছে এবং তিনি তার দিকে তাকিয়ে আছেন।
"I do not know you, and have nothing to forgive you for," said the Tsar.
"আমি তোমাকে চিনি না, আর তোমাকে ক্ষমা করার মতো কোনো কারণও আমার নেই," বললেন জার।
"You do not know me, but I know you. I am that enemy of yours who swore to revenge himself on you, because you executed his brother and seized his property.
"আপনি আমাকে না চিনলেও, আমি আপনাকে চিনি। আমি আপনার সেই শত্রু, যে শপথ করেছিল আপনার উপর প্রতিশোধ নেবে, কারণ আপনি আমার ভাইকে মৃত্যুদণ্ড দিয়েছিলেন এবং আমার সম্পত্তি বাজেয়াপ্ত করেছিলেন।"
"I knew you had gone alone to see the hermit, and I resolved to kill you on your way back.
"আমি জানতাম আপনি একা সন্ন্যাসীর কাছে গিয়েছেন, তাই ঠিক করেছিলাম ফেরার পথে আপনাকে হত্যা করব।"
"But the day passed and you did not return. So I came out from my ambush to find you, and I came upon your bodyguard, and they recognised me, and wounded me.
"কিন্তু দিন কেটে গেল, আর আপনি ফেরেননি। তাই আমি আমার লুকানোর জায়গা থেকে বেরিয়ে আপনাকে খুঁজতে এলাম। তখন আপনার দেহরক্ষীদের সামনে পড়ে যাই। তারা আমাকে চিনে ফেলল এবং আমাকে আঘাত করল।"
"I escaped from them, but should have bled to death had you not dressed my wound.
"আমি তাদের কাছ থেকে কোনোভাবে পালিয়ে এলেও, আপনি যদি আমার ক্ষত বাঁধতেন না, তবে আমি রক্তক্ষরণে মারা যেতাম।"
"I wished to kill you, and you have saved my life.
"আমি আপনাকে হত্যা করতে চেয়েছিলাম, অথচ আপনি আমার জীবন রক্ষা করেছেন।"
"Now, if I live, and if you wish it, I will serve you as your most faithful slave, and will bid my sons do the same. Forgive me!"
"এখন, যদি আমি বেঁচে থাকি এবং আপনি অনুমতি দেন, তবে আমি আপনার সবচেয়ে অনুগত দাস হয়ে সেবা করব, এবং আমার ছেলেদেরও তাই করতে বলব। আমাকে ক্ষমা করুন!"
The Tsar was very glad to have made peace with his enemy so easily, and to have gained him for a friend, and he not only forgave him, but said he would send his servants and his own physician to attend him, and promised to restore his property.
জার অত্যন্ত খুশি হলেন যে, তিনি এত সহজে নিজের শত্রুর সঙ্গে মিটমাট করতে পেরেছেন এবং তাকে বন্ধুরূপে পেয়েছেন। তিনি শুধু তাকে ক্ষমাই করলেন না, বরং বললেন যে তিনি নিজের চাকর ও চিকিৎসককে পাঠাবেন তার দেখাশোনা করতে, এবং তার সম্পত্তিও ফিরিয়ে দেবেন বলে প্রতিশ্রুতি দিলেন।
Having taken leave of the wounded man, the Tsar went out into the porch and looked around for the hermit.
আহত মানুষটির কাছ থেকে বিদায় নিয়ে জার বারান্দায় বেরিয়ে এলেন এবং সন্ন্যাসীকে খুঁজে চারপাশে তাকালেন।
Before going away he wished once more to beg an answer to the questions he had put.
চলে যাওয়ার আগে তিনি আবারও একবার তাঁর করা প্রশ্নগুলোর উত্তর জানতে চাইলেন।
The hermit was outside, on his knees, sowing seeds in the beds that had been dug the day before.
সন্ন্যাসী বাইরে হাঁটু গেড়ে বসে আগের দিন খোঁড়া বাগানের গর্তগুলিতে বীজ বপন করছিলেন।
The Tsar approached him, and said: "For the last time, I pray you to answer my questions, wise man."
জার তাঁর কাছে গিয়ে বললেন, “শেষবারের মতো তোমাকে অনুরোধ করছি, হে জ্ঞানী ব্যক্তি, আমার প্রশ্নগুলোর উত্তর দাও।”
"You have already been answered!" said the hermit, still crouching on his thin legs, and looking up at the Tsar, who stood before him.
“তুমি ইতিমধ্যেই উত্তর পেয়েছো!” বললেন সন্ন্যাসী, তাঁর পাতলা পায়ে ভর দিয়ে বসে থেকেই জারের দিকে তাকিয়ে।
"How answered? What do you mean?" asked the Tsar.
“কীভাবে উত্তর পেলাম? তুমি কী বোঝাতে চাও?” জিজ্ঞেস করলেন জার।
"Do you not see," replied the hermit. "If you had not pitied my weakness yesterday, and had not dug those beds for me, but had gone your way, that man would have attacked you, and you would have repented of not having stayed with me."
“তুমি কি বুঝতে পারছো না?” উত্তর দিলেন সন্ন্যাসী। “যদি তুমি গতকাল আমার দুর্বলতার প্রতি দয়া না দেখাতে, এবং আমার জন্য সেই মাটি না খুঁড়তে, বরং নিজের পথে চলে যেতে, তাহলে সেই লোকটি তোমার উপর আক্রমণ করত, আর তুমি আমার সঙ্গে না থাকায় অনুতপ্ত হতে।”
"So the most important time was when you were digging the beds; and I was the most important man; and to do me good was your most important business."
“তাহলে সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ সময় ছিল যখন তুমি মাটি খুঁড়ছিলে; সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ মানুষ ছিলাম আমি; আর আমাকে সাহায্য করাটাই ছিল তোমার সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ কাজ।”
"Afterwards when that man ran to us, the most important time was when you were attending to him, for if you had not bound up his wounds he would have died without having made peace with you."
“তারপর যখন সেই আহত মানুষটি আমাদের দিকে দৌড়ে এলো, তখন সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ সময় ছিল যখন তুমি তার ক্ষত বাঁধছিলে, কারণ তুমি যদি তা না করতে, তবে সে তোমার সঙ্গে শান্তি না করেই মারা যেত।”
"So he was the most important man, and what you did for him was your most important business."
“তাই তখন সে ই ছিল সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ মানুষ, এবং তার জন্য তুমি যা করেছিলে, সেটাই ছিল তোমার সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ কাজ।”
"Remember then: there is only one time that is important — Now!"
“তাহলে মনে রাখো: একটাই সময় সত্যিই গুরুত্বপূর্ণ — আর সেটা হলো বর্তমান সময়!”
"It is the most important time because it is the only time when we have any power."
“এই সময়টাই সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ, কারণ এই সময়েই আমাদের কিছু করার ক্ষমতা থাকে।”
"The most necessary man is he with whom you are, for no man knows whether he will ever have dealings with anyone else."
“সবচেয়ে প্রয়োজনীয় মানুষ হল সে, যে তোমার সঙ্গে এই মুহূর্তে আছে, কারণ কেউই জানে না ভবিষ্যতে সে অন্য কারও সঙ্গে সম্পর্ক রাখবে কি না।”
"And the most important affair is, to do him good, because for that purpose alone was man sent into this life!"
“আর সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ কাজ হলো, সেই মানুষের ভালো করা, কারণ মানুষকে এই পৃথিবীতে পাঠানো হয়েছে শুধু এই উদ্দেশ্যেই — যেন সে অন্যের মঙ্গল করে।”
এই অংশে সন্ন্যাসী জারকে বোঝান যে জীবনের তিনটি প্রশ্নের উত্তর সে ইতিমধ্যেই পেয়েছে —
1️⃣ সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ সময় হলো বর্তমান।
2️⃣ সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ মানুষ হলো সেই ব্যক্তি, যে এই মুহূর্তে তোমার সঙ্গে আছে।
3️⃣ সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ কাজ হলো অন্যের মঙ্গল করা, কারণ এই কাজের জন্যই মানুষ জন্মগ্রহণ করেছে।
