We have no prairies

আমাদের (আমেরিকার মতো) কোনো দিগন্তবিস্তৃত সমতল প্রান্তর নেই


To slice a big sun at evening    

যা সন্ধ্যার ডুবন্ত বিশাল সূর্যকে আড়াআড়িভাবে কেটে ফেলবে—


Everywhere the eye concedes to

যেখানেই চোখ যায়, দৃষ্টি বাধা পেয়ে মেনে নেয়


Encroaching horizon,

চারিদিক থেকে চেপে আসা বা সংকুচিত দিগন্তকে,


Stanza 2

Is wooed into the cyclops' eye

দৃষ্টি আকৃষ্ট হয়ে আটকে যায় একচক্ষু দানবের চোখের মতো


Of a tarn. Our unfenced country


কোনো পাহাড়ি হ্রদের দিকে। আমাদের কোনো সীমানা বা বেড়া না  থাকা দেশ


Is bog that keeps crusting


মূলত এমন এক জলাভূমি যা শুকিয়ে উপরে স্তর তৈরি করতে থাকে


Between the sights of the sun.


সারাদিনের রোদের তাপে (সূর্যোদয় থেকে সূর্যাস্তের মাঝে)।


Stanza 3


They've taken the skeleton


তারা সম্পূর্ণ কঙ্কালটি তুলে এনেছে


Of the Great Irish Elk


বিশালাকার প্রাগৈতিহাসিক আইরিশ হরিণের


Out of the peat, set it up


পিট জলাভূমির গভীরে থেকে, এবং সেটিকে খাড়া করে সাজিয়ে রেখেছে


An astounding crate full of air.


যেন বাতাসে পূর্ণ এক বিস্ময়কর খাঁচা বা কাঠামো।


Stanza 4


Butter sunk under


মাটির নিচে পুঁতে রাখা মাখন


More than a hundred years


যা এক শতাব্দীরও বেশি সময় চাপা পড়ে ছিল


Was recovered salty and white.


তা উদ্ধার করা হয়েছে এখনও নোনতা এবং সাদা  তাজা অবস্থায়।


The ground itself is kind, black butter


এখানকার মাটি নিজেই যেন এক নরম, কালো মাখন


Stanza 5


Melting and opening underfoot,


যা পায়ের নিচে নরম হয়ে বসে যায় এবং ফেটে খুলে যায়,


Missing its last definition


যা তার চূড়ান্ত শক্ত ও নির্দিষ্ট রূপ নিতে ব্যর্থ হয়েছে


By millions of years.


লক্ষ লক্ষ বছর পেরিয়ে গেলেও।


They'll never dig coal here,


তারা এখানে খুঁড়ে কখনোই কয়লা পাবে না,

Only the waterlogged trunks


কেবল পাওয়া যাবে জলে ভেজা বিশাল কাণ্ডগুলো


Of great firs, soft as pulp.


প্রাচীন দেবদারু (ফার) গাছের, যা মণ্ডের মতো নরম হয়ে গেছে।


Our pioneers keep striking


আমাদের দেশের আবিষ্কারকরা বা অগ্রদূতরা আঘাত হেনে চলেন


Inwards and downwards,


বাইরের দিকে না গিয়ে দেশের ভিতরের দিকে এবং মাটির গভীরে,


Stanza 7


Every layer they strip


মাটির যে প্রতিটি স্তর তারা কেটে উন্মোচন করেন


Seems camped on before.


মনে হয় সেখানেই অতীতে মানুষেরা বসবাস করে গেছে।


The bogholes might be Atlantic seepage.


এই জলাভূমির গভীর গর্তগুলো সম্ভবত আটলান্টিক মহাসাগরের চুইয়ে আসা জল।


The wet centre is bottomless.


এই আর্দ্র কেন্দ্রের কোনো তল নেই, এটি অতলস্পর্শী।








    Stanza 1    


       "We have no prairies"    


   Ireland does not have huge, flat, open grasslands like North America.


       "To slice a big sun at evening    "    


   There are no wide  open plains where the setting sun cuts cleanly across an unbroken horizon.


       "Everywhere the eye concedes to"    


   Wherever a person looks, their vision is forced to stop.


       "Encroaching horizon,"    


   The hills and mountains seem to lean in closely, shutting off distant views.


      


    Stanza 2    


       "Is wooed into the cyclops' eye"    


   The viewer's gaze is drawn magnetically toward a single, circular body of water, like the single round eye of a mythical giant.


       "Of a tarn. Our unfenced country"    


   That water is a small, dark mountain pool. The open, unbordered Irish land...


       "Is bog that keeps crusting"    


   ...is made entirely of wet peat bog that forms a dry crust on top...


       "Between the sights of the sun."    


   ...from morning to evening while the sun shines on it.


      


    Stanza 3    


       "They've taken the skeleton"    


   Archaeologists have dug up the complete bony frame...


       "Of the Great Irish Elk"    


   ...of a massive, prehistoric deer that went extinct long ago.


       "Out of the peat, set it up"    


   They lifted it out of the wet mud and assembled it on display...


       "An astounding crate full of air."    


   ...where its huge ribcage stands open like an astonishing, empty wooden cage.


      


    Stanza 4    


       "Butter sunk under"    


   Ancient farmers buried wooden tubs of butter deep in the damp earth.


       "More than a hundred years"    


   The dairy remained buried inside the ground for over a century.


       "Was recovered salty and white."    


   Diggers found it again, perfectly preserved, clean, and still salty.


       "The ground itself is kind, black butter"    


   The dark, spongy peat earth feels welcoming and soft, just like the butter it preserves.


      


    Stanza 5    


       "Melting and opening underfoot,"    


   The soil gives way and sinks beneath a person's walking boots.


       "Missing its last definition"    


   The earth never turns into solid, hard rock.


       "By millions of years."    


   Even after vast geological ages, it remains soft, damp, and unformed.


       "They'll never dig coal here,"    


   Miners will not find hard fossil fuels like mineral coal in this land.


      


    Stanza 6    


       "Only the waterlogged trunks"    


   Diggers find only the drowned, heavy stems...


       "Of great firs, soft as pulp."    


   ...of ancient evergreen fir trees, completely soaked into soft mush.


       "Our pioneers keep striking"    


   Irish explorers and turf  cutters do not journey outwards across flat frontiers; instead, they dig...


       "Inwards and downwards,"    


   ...straight down into the interior and depth of their own earth.


      


    Stanza 7    


       "Every layer they strip"    


   Each level of dark peat that the shovel cuts away...


       "Seems camped on before."    


   ...shows traces of ancient humans who lived on that surface in the past.


       "The bogholes might be Atlantic seepage."    


   The deep, water  filled sinkholes in the peat may be fed directly by the Atlantic Ocean leaking through the ground.


       "The wet centre is bottomless."    


   The core of Ireland’s wet land has no firm rock floor; it opens into endless, infinite depth and living memory.
