A wonder in the plant kingdom, the Great Banyan Tree of the Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanical Garden at Shibpur in Howrah occupies a unique position in the Guinness Book of World Records. It is now regarded as the widest tree in the world in terms of the area of canopy. The present crown of the tree has a circumference of 450 metres and the highest branch rises to 24.5 metres.
The tree was first noticed in 1786, three years before the Royal Botanical Garden, Calcutta, came into existence. A Visit to an Unknown Place
Last summer vacation, I got the wonderful opportunity to visit a small, lesser-known hill village named Rishyap in North Bengal. On May 15th, accompanied by my parents and two close friends, we took an overnight train from Kolkata to New Jalpaiguri and then hired a car to reach this tranquil place. Tucked away from the bustling tourist hubs, Rishyap greeted us with crisp mountain air, dense pine forests, and a breathtaking, panoramic view of the majestic Kanchenjunga peak. We stayed in a charming wooden homestay managed by warm local villagers, who served us delicious traditional meals. During our stay, we went on long nature walks, listened to the soothing chirping of unseen birds, and sat around a bonfire gazing at an incredible star-filled night sky. Free from urban noise and pollution, the trip filled my mind with immense peace, joy, and unforgettable memories of nature’s unspoiled beauty.
