The God of Love (Cupid) went to Flora, the Goddess of flowers and nature. He asked her for a flower that would be accepted by everyone as the absolute queen of all flowers without any doubt.

For a very long time, the lily and the rose had been enemies or competitors for this top position. Many famous and powerful poets had written poems supporting either the lily or the rose.

Poets argued about them. Some said the beautiful red rose could never stand tall and graceful like the pale, white lily, who looks majestic like Juno (the queen of Roman Gods).

The God of Love asked Flora to create a new flower that is as sweet, fragrant, and attractive as the rose, and at the same time, as grand, majestic, and proud as the lily.

Flora asked, "But what color should it be?" Love first chose the deep red of the rose. Then he changed his mind and said, "No, make it white like the lily—or wait, give me a flower that has both colours!"

Finally, Flora gave him the Lotus. It was beautifully colored with both the red of the rose and the white of the lily. It became the most royal and magnificent flower that blooms in the world.

English Summary
