Part 1: Change the Narration (Direct to Indirect / Indirect to Direct)

Part 2: Change the Voice (Active to Passive / Passive to Active)

  1. The mechanic is repairing the car.
  2. Shakespeare wrote Hamlet.

  5. People speak English all over the world.
  6. The letter was delivered by the postman this morning.

Part 3: Simple, Complex, and Compound Transformations

  1. Make it Complex: Seeing the police, the thief ran away.
  2. Make it Compound: Though he is poor, he is very honest.
  3. Make it Simple: He worked hard so that he could pass the examination.
  4. Make it Complex: He confessed his crime.
  5. Make it Simple: I have a dog which is very faithful.

Part 4: "As soon as" Transformations

Instruction: Rewrite the following sentences using "No sooner ... than".

  1. As soon as the bell rang, the students rushed out of the class.
  2. As soon as he reached the station, the train left.
  3. As soon as the sun rose, the fog dispersed.
  4. As soon as the mother saw her baby, she smiled.
  5. As soon as the match started, it began to rain.

Part 5: "Only" Transformations

Instruction: Rewrite the sentences making them negative without changing the meaning (e.g., using "None but", "Nothing but", etc.).

  3. Only the brave deserve the fair.
  4. She is only five years old.
  5. Only a miracle can save him now.

Part 6: "Too ... to" Transformations

Instruction: Rewrite using "so ... that".

  1. He is too weak to walk properly.
  2. The news is too good to be true.
  3. She was too proud to beg.
  4. The problem was too difficult for me to solve.
  5. It is never too late to mend.

Part 7: Noun to Verb Transformations

Instruction: Rewrite the sentence by changing the underlined noun into its verb form.

  1. He gave a reply to my letter.
  2. She made an agreement with the company.
  3. His intention was to help the poor.
  4. They had a discussion about the new policy.
  5. The teacher gave him punishment for being late.
