Positive Degree

Examples

1. No other boy in the class is as good as Ram.

2. Very few boys in the class are as good as Ram.

➤ Rule: No other / Very few + subject's identity + others + verb + as + Positive form of adjective + as + Subject.

Solved Examples:

1. Sachin is the greatest cricketer.
➤ No other cricketer is as great as Sachin.

2. Sachin is one of the greatest cricketers.
➤ Very few cricketers are as great as Sachin.

3. Ram is taller than any other player.

Rule - 2 (Two Objects Comparison):

1. Ram is taller than Sita

2. Rabon is greater than Rahim

Comparative Degree

Example: Ram is better than any other boy in the class. / Ram is better than most other boys in the class.

➤ Rule: Subject + verb + Comparative form of adjective + than + any other / most other + subject's identity + others.

Type 1: General Comparison (Superlative to others)

Rule:
  • Superlative: Sub + verb + the + Superlative form + Identity.
  • Comparative: Sub + verb + Comp. form + than any other + Identity.
  • Positive: No other + Identity + verb + as/so + Pos. form + as + Sub.

Examples:

1. Superlative: Mount Everest is the highest peak in the world.

➤ Comparative: Mount Everest is higher than any other peak in the world.

➤ Positive: No other peak in the world is as high as Mount Everest.


2. Superlative: Iron is the most useful metal.

➤ Comparative: Iron is more useful than any other metal.

➤ Positive: No other metal is as useful as iron.


3. Superlative: Kolkata is the largest city in West Bengal.

➤ Comparative: Kolkata is larger than any other city in West Bengal.

➤ Positive: No other city in West Bengal is as large as Kolkata.

Type 2: "One of the" Comparison

Rule:
  • Superlative: Sub + verb + one of the + Superlative form + Identity(Plural).
  • Comparative: Sub + verb + Comp. form + than most other + Identity(Plural).
  • Positive: Very few + Identity(Plural) + Verb(Plural) + as + Pos. form + as + Sub.

Examples:

1. Superlative: Rabindranath is one of the greatest poets.

➤ Comparative: Rabindranath is greater than most other poets.

➤ Positive: Very few poets are as great as Rabindranath.


2. Superlative: Rose is one of the most beautiful flowers.
