An Astrologer's Day: Line-by-Line Translation
'Stop,' said the other. 'I don't want all that.'
'থামো,' অন্যজন বলল। 'আমি ওসব শুনতে চাই না।'
'Shall I succeed in my present search or not?'
'আমি কি আমার বর্তমান খোঁজে সফল হব কি হব না?'
'Answer this and go. Otherwise I will not let you go till you disgorge all your coins.'
'এর উত্তর দাও আর যাও। নাহলে যতক্ষণ না তুমি তোমার সব কয়েন (টাকা) ফেরত দিচ্ছ, আমি তোমাকে যেতে দেব না।'
The astrologer muttered a few incantations and replied:
জ্যোতিষী কিছু মন্ত্র বিড়বিড় করে জপ করলেন এবং উত্তর দিলেন:
'All right. I will speak. But will you give me a rupee if what I say is convincing?'
'ঠিক আছে। আমি বলব। কিন্তু আমার কথা যদি বিশ্বাসযোগ্য হয়, তবে কি তুমি আমাকে এক টাকা দেবে?'
'Otherwise I will not open my mouth, and you may do what you like.'
'নাহলে আমি মুখ খুলব না, আর তুমি যা খুশি করতে পারো।'
After a good deal of haggling the other agreed.

The astrologer said: 'You were left for dead. Am I right?'
জ্যোতিষী বললেন: 'তোমাকে মৃত ভেবে ফেলে রাখা হয়েছিল। আমি কি ঠিক?'
'Ah, tell me more.'
'আহ, আমাকে আরও বলো।'
'A knife has passed through you once' said the astrologer.
'একবার তোমার শরীরের ভেতর দিয়ে ছুরি চালানো হয়েছিল' জ্যোতিষী বললেন।
'Good fellow!' He bared his chest to show the scar. 'What else?'
'চমৎকার বন্ধু!' সে তার বুকের ক্ষতচিহ্ন দেখানোর জন্য জামা সরাল। 'আর কী?'
'And then you were pushed into a well nearby in the field. You were left for dead.'
'এবং তারপর তোমাকে মাঠের পাশের একটি কুয়োতে ঠেলে ফেলে দেওয়া হয়েছিল। তোমাকে মৃত ভেবেই ছেড়ে যাওয়া হয়েছিল।'
'I should have been dead if some passer-by had not chanced to peep into the well,' exclaimed the other, overwhelmed by enthusiasm.
'আমি মারাই যেতাম যদি না কোনো পথচারী হঠাৎ করে কুয়োর দিকে উঁকি দিত,' অন্যজন প্রবল উৎসাহের সাথে চিৎকার করে উঠল।
'When shall I get at him?' he asked clenching his fist.
'কবে আমি তাকে ধরতে পারব?' সে মুষ্টিবদ্ধ হাতে জিজ্ঞাসা করল।
'In the next world,' answered the astrologer.
'পরের জন্মে (পরকালে),' জ্যোতিষী উত্তর দিলেন।
'He died four months ago in a far-off town. You will never see any more of him.'
'সে চার মাস আগে এক দূরবর্তী শহরে মারা গেছে। তুমি তাকে আর কখনও দেখতে পাবে না।'
The other groaned on hearing it. The astrologer proceeded: 'Guru Nayak.'
অন্যজন শুনে যন্ত্রণায় গোঙাতে লাগল। জ্যোতিষী বলতে থাকলেন: 'গুরু নায়ক।'
'You know my name!' the other said, taken aback.
'তুমি আমার নাম জানো!' অন্যজন অবাক হয়ে বলল।
'As I know all other things. Guru Nayak, listen carefully to what I have to say.'
'যেমন আমি অন্য সব জিনিস জানি। গুরু নায়ক, আমি যা বলছি মন দিয়ে শোনো।'
'Your village is two days' journey due north of this town.'

'Take the next train and be gone. I see once again great danger to your life if you go from home.'
