An Astrologer's Day: Final Part (Bengali Translation)

He took out a pinch of sacred ash and held it to him.
তিনি এক চিমটি পবিত্র ছাই (বিভূতি) বের করলেন এবং তার দিকে ধরলেন।

'Rub it on your forehead and go home.'
'এটি তোমার কপালে ঘষে নাও এবং বাড়ি চলে যাও।'

'Never travel Southward again, and you will live to be a hundred.'
'আর কখনও দক্ষিণ দিকে যাত্রা করো না, তাহলে তুমি একশো বছর বাঁচবে।'

'Why should I leave home again?' the other said reflectively.
'আমি কেন আবার বাড়ি ছাড়ব?' অন্যজন চিন্তিতভাবে বলল।

'I was only going away now and then to look for him and to choke out his life if I met him.'
'আমি শুধু মাঝে মাঝে তাকে খুঁজতে বের হতাম এবং যদি দেখা পেতাম তবে তার শ্বাসরোধ করে তাকে মেরে ফেলতাম।'

He shook his head regretfully. 'He has escaped my hands.'
সে আফসোসের সাথে মাথা নাড়ল। 'সে আমার হাত থেকে বেঁচে গেছে।'

'I hope at least he died as he deserved.'
'আমি আশা করি সে অন্তত তেমনই মৃত্যু পেয়েছে যার সে যোগ্য ছিল।'

'Yes,' said the astrologer. 'He was crushed under a lorry.'
'হ্যাঁ,' জ্যোতিষী বললেন। 'সে একটি লরির তলায় পিষ্ট হয়ে মারা গেছে।'

The other looked gratified to hear it.

The place was deserted by the time the astrologer picked up his articles and put them into his bag.

It was nearly midnight when the astrologer reached home.
যখন জ্যোতিষী বাড়ি পৌঁছালেন তখন প্রায় মাঝরাত।

His wife was waiting for him at the door and demanded an explanation.
তার স্ত্রী দরজায় তার জন্য অপেক্ষা করছিলেন এবং দেরি হওয়ার কারণ জানতে চাইলেন।

He flung the coins at her and said: 'Count them. One man gave all that.'
তিনি তার (স্ত্রীর) দিকে কয়েনগুলো ছুড়ে দিয়ে বললেন: 'এগুলো গুণো। একজন লোক এই সব দিয়েছে।'

'Twelve and a half annas,' she said, counting. She was overjoyed.
'সাড়ে বারো আনা,' সে গুনতে গুনতে বলল। সে খুব খুশি হলো।

'I can buy some jaggery and coconut tomorrow.'
'আমি আগামীকাল কিছু গুড় এবং নারকেল কিনতে পারব।'

'The child has been asking for sweets for so many days now. I will prepare some nice stuff for her.'
'বাচ্চাটা অনেক দিন ধরে মিষ্টি খেতে চাইছে। আমি তার জন্য দারুণ কিছু তৈরি করব।'

"The swine has cheated me! He promised me a rupee,' said the astrologer.
"শয়তানটা আমাকে ঠকিয়েছে! সে আমাকে এক টাকা দেওয়ার কথা দিয়েছিল,' জ্যোতিষী বললেন।

She looked up at him. 'You look worried. What is wrong?' 'Nothing.'
সে তার দিকে তাকাল। 'তোমাকে চিন্তিত দেখাচ্ছে। কী হয়েছে?' 'কিছু না।'

After dinner, sitting on the pyol, he told her:
রাতের খাবারের পর, দাওয়ায় (pyol) বসে তিনি তাকে বললেন:

'Do you know a great load is gone from me today?'
'তুমি কি জানো আজ আমার ওপর থেকে অনেক বড় একটা বোঝা নেমে গেছে?'

'I thought I had the blood of a man on my hands all these years.'
'আমি ভেবেছিলাম এতদিন আমার হাতে একজন মানুষের রক্ত লেগে আছে।'

'That was the reason why I ran away from home, settled down here, and married you. He is alive.'
'সেই কারণেই আমি বাড়ি থেকে পালিয়েছিলাম, এখানে বসতি গড়েছিলাম এবং তোমাকে বিয়ে করেছিলাম। সে বেঁচে আছে।'

She gasped. "You tried to kill!'
সে দীর্ঘশ্বাস ফেলে উঠল। "তুমি মারার চেষ্টা করেছিলে!'

'Yes in our village, when I was a silly youngster, we drank, gambled, and quarrelled badly one day—why think of it now?'
'হ্যাঁ আমাদের গ্রামে, যখন আমি এক বোকা যুবক ছিলাম, আমরা একদিন মদ্যপান করেছিলাম, জুয়া খেলেছিলাম এবং মারাত্মক ঝগড়া করেছিলাম—এখন সে সব কেন ভাবা?'

'Time to sleep,' he said yawning, and stretched himself on the pyol.
