Discuss the title of Riders to the Sea, Class XII, Semester 4 WBCHSE
The title “Riders to the Sea” is very meaningful. In the play, the riders are the men of the Aran Islands who must cross the sea in their boats to earn a living. Bartley, Maurya’s last living son, leaves riding a red horse, and Maurya imagines her dead son Michael riding behind him. The sea stands for nature, which is strong and dangerous. It is the giver and taker of life. It gives the islanders food and work, but it also takes their lives. The title also reminds us of a line from the Bible about the Red Sea swallowing riders and horses. This makes the tragedy feel universal and powerful. In simple words, the title shows that the people who go to the sea are often going towards death, even though they depend on the sea to survive.
