About the Poem:

"Hawk Roosting" is a dramatic monologue in which a hawk speaks as a symbol of power, dominance, and control. The poem explores themes of power, arrogance, natural order, and the brutality of existence. The hawk, perched at the top of the food chain, represents the idea of absolute power, seeing itself as the ultimate ruler of nature. The poem can be interpreted as a commentary on dictatorship, showing the mindset of an authoritarian ruler who believes in their divine right to control and dominate. It also reflects Hughes' view of nature as both beautiful and merciless, where survival depends on strength and instinct.

I sit in the top of the wood¹, my eyes closed. 

Inaction, no falsifying dream² 

Between my hooked head and hooked³ feet: 

Or in sleep rehearse perfect kills and eat.

The poem starts with the hawk saying that he sits on the top of a tall tree with his eyes closed. He stays still and quiet. He does not dream or imagine anything false. Even while resting, he practises how to hunt and eat his prey in the best and most effective way.

কবিতাটি শুরু হয় বাজপাখি বা “হক”-এর বক্তব্য দিয়ে। সে বলে যে সে জঙ্গলের একদম উঁচু গাছের ডালে বসে আছে, চোখ বন্ধ করে। সে একদম স্থির, শান্তভাবে বসে থাকে। সে কোনও ভ্রান্ত স্বপ্ন দেখে না বা কল্পনা করে না। এমনকি বিশ্রাম নেওয়ার সময়ও সে অনুশীলন করে কীভাবে সবচেয়ে নিখুঁতভাবে তার শিকারকে হত্যা ও খেতে হয়।

Wood: The hawk is at the highest point of the forest, symbolizing supreme power and control.

Dream: It does not indulge in self-deception or unnecessary thoughts.

Hooked: The repetition of "hooked" emphasizes the hawk's physical adaptations for hunting and killing.

Sleep: Even in sleep, the hawk is focused on its survival and dominance.

The convenience of the high trees! 

The air's buoyancy and the sun's ray 

Are of advantage to me; 

And the earth's face upward for my inspection.

The hawk admires the tall trees because they are useful to him. The air above is light and fresh, and the sunlight is strong. These things help him to see his prey clearly. From this high place, he can look down and watch everything that happens on the ground.

Buoyancy: The hawk acknowledges how nature supports its flight.

"Creation: The hawk claims that the entire universe worked to create it.

My feet are locked upon the rough bark. 

It took the whole of Creation

 To produce my foot, my each feather:

 Now I hold Creation in my foot".

He says that his claws are tightly fixed to the bark of the tree. Referring to the idea of God’s creation, the hawk proudly says that his claws and feathers are made by his own power, as if he himself is the best creation in the world.

সে বলে, তার নখ গাছের বাকলে দৃঢ়ভাবে আঁকড়ে আছে। সে ঈশ্বরের সৃষ্টি ধারণাকে ইঙ্গিত করে বলে যে তার নখ আর পালক তার নিজের শক্তিতেই তৈরি, যেন সে ঈশ্বরের শ্রেষ্ঠ সৃষ্টি।

"My foot: The hawk suggests that it now controls the world, implying absolute power.

Or fly up, and revolve it all slowly 

I kill where I please because it is all mine.

 There is no sophistry' in my body: 

My manners are tearing off heads

Now the hawk feels that the whole world lies under his feet. When he flies high in the sky, he feels as if he makes the world move. He believes that he has the strength and control of a god.

The hawk kills as he wishes, wherever and whenever he wants. Every living creature belongs to him. He doesn’t make excuses or false arguments for his cruel acts — instead of using polite words, he shows his power by killing his prey.

এখন বাজপাখি মনে করে, পুরো পৃথিবী যেন তার পায়ের নিচে। যখন সে আকাশে উড়ে বেড়ায়, তখন তার মনে হয় যেন সে পৃথিবীটাকেই ঘুরিয়ে দিচ্ছে। সে বিশ্বাস করে যে তার ঈশ্বরের মতোই ক্ষমতা আছে।

বাজপাখি ইচ্ছেমতো হত্যা করে—যেখানেই চায়, যেকোনও সময় চায়। প্রতিটি জীবন্ত প্রাণীই তার অধীন। সে কখনও তার নিষ্ঠুর কাজের জন্য অজুহাত দেয় না বা ভান করে না। ভদ্র আচরণের বদলে, সে তার শিকারের মাথা ছিঁড়ে তার শক্তি প্রকাশ করে।

Kill: The hawk claims unrestricted freedom to kill.

Sophistry: Deceptive reasoning. The hawk claims that it is not deceitful but purely driven by instinct, unlike humans who justify their actions with complex reasoning.

The allotment of death

For the one path of my flight is direct¹¹ 

Through the bones of the living.

 No arguments assert my right:

He says that this is the natural way of life and death. When he flies, many small creatures die in his path. He doesn’t feel the need to defend his actions.

Direct: Unchallenged authority

The sun is behind me.

Nothing has changed since I began. 

My eye has permitted no change

 I am going to keep things like this

The sun is said to be “behind” him. This may mean that the sun helps him to see better, or it could mean that the powerful sun supports his deadly actions, standing by his side.

Finally, the hawk says that he will never give up his control over the world. Nothing has changed in nature since he began to rule. His sharp eyes have made sure that everything remains exactly the same.
