✦ UNSEEN PASSAGE ✦

Read the passage carefully and answer the following questions:

There are three regions in the world where earthquakes are most likely to happen. Scientists call them earthquake zones. The first runs along the east coast of Asia, through Japan and across Alaska, then down to the west coast of North America, crossing Mexico and ending somewhere in the Caribbean Sea. The second runs down the west coast of South America. The third runs across the south of Europe and North Africa, through Greece and Turkey and into the middle of Asia.

There are several other fault lines. Most earthquakes in history have happened in one of these three zones. So it is possible for scientists to say where they think the earthquake will strike, but they cannot say exactly when. It is known that sometime in future there will be a major earthquake in California, which is situated right above the best-known zone in the world, the San Andreas Fault. When it comes, the damage and loss of life will constitute a major disaster. It will happen anytime between now and the next 8,000 years; so it is not a practical thought to evacuate the cities. One can remember the Los Angeles earthquake in February 1971 which was caused by the San Andreas Fault. It was not a major earthquake.
