Sonnet 118 

Like as, to make our appetites more keen,  

With eager compounds we our palate urge,  

As, to prevent our maladies unseen,  

We sicken to shun sickness when we purge;  

Even so, being tuff of your ne'er-cloying sweetness,  

To bitter sauces did I frame my feeding;  

And, sick of welfare, found a kind of meetness  

To be diseased, ere that there was true needing.  

Thus policy in love, to anticipate  

The ills that were not, grew to faults assured,  

And brought to medicine a healthful state,  

Which, rank of goodness, would by ill be cured;  

But thence I learn, and find the lesson true,  

Drugs poison him that so fell sick of you.

যেমন করে আমরা ক্ষুধা বাড়ানোর জন্য  

তীক্ষ্ণ মিশ্রণ দিয়ে আমাদের রুচি উদ্দীপিত করি,  

অদৃশ্য রোগ প্রতিরোধের জন্য যেমন  

আমরা অসুস্থ হয়ে রোগ এড়াতে ওষুধ গ্রহণ করি;  

ঠিক তেমনি, তোমার মধুরতার অতিরিক্তে,  

আমি তিক্ত খাদ্যে আমার পেট ভরিয়েছি;  

আর, সুস্থতার থেকেও ক্লান্ত হয়ে,  

একটি কৃত্রিম প্রয়োজন অনুভব করেছিলাম,  

আসল প্রয়োজনের আগেই অসুস্থ হওয়ার জন্য।  

এই কৌশল, ভালবাসায়, ভবিষ্যতের ক্ষতি থেকে বাঁচতে  

এমন সমস্যার জন্ম দিয়েছিল যা সত্যিই ছিল না,  

এবং স্বাস্থ্যবান অবস্থাকে ওষুধের মাধ্যমে সংশোধন করতে চেয়েছিল,  

যা, অধিক ভাল থেকে, অসুস্থতায় পরিবর্তিত হয়।  

কিন্তু সেখান থেকে আমি শিখেছি, এবং সত্যটা উপলব্ধি করেছি,  

যে ওষুধই বিষ হয়ে দাঁড়ায়, যদি তোমার মধুরতায় আমার অসুস্থতা হয়।

শেক্সপিয়ারের এই কবিতায় তিনি ভালোবাসার জটিলতা ও অতিরিক্ত সতর্কতা নিয়ে আলোচনা করছেন। কবি বলছেন, যেমন আমরা আমাদের ক্ষুধা বাড়ানোর জন্য তিক্ত খাবার গ্রহণ করি বা অসুস্থতা এড়াতে ওষুধ খাই, তেমনি ভালোবাসায় অযথা সমস্যার সমাধান খুঁজতে গিয়ে প্রকৃত সমস্যা সৃষ্টি হতে পারে। অতিরিক্ত সুখ থেকেও এক সময় ক্লান্তি আসতে পারে, আর তখন ওষুধের প্রয়োজনও বিষে পরিণত হয়।

   That the very medicine (or caution) becomes poison to the one who falsely believed he was sick because of you.

Shakespeare compares the way we take precautions (such as purging or consuming sharp flavors) to enhance health or appetite with how he tried to handle his love. He metaphorically "overindulged" in the sweetness of his lover, leading him to seek out bitterness (problems) where there was none. In doing so, he created real issues out of a fear of problems that didn’t exist.
