Chapter 10
Once there was a bird. It was an utterly foolish bird.
একদা একটি পাখি ছিল। এটি ছিল অত্যন্ত বোকা একটি পাখি।
It sang songs, but did not read the scriptures.
সে গান গাইত, কিন্তু শাস্ত্র পড়ত না।
It flew, it jumped, but did not have the faintest sense of etiquette.
সে উড়ত, লাফাত, কিন্তু আদবকেতা বা কায়দাকানুন সম্পর্কে তার লেশমাত্র জ্ঞান ছিল না।
The King said, "Such birds! They are of no use at all."
রাজা বললেন, "এমন পাখি! এরা কোন কাজেরই নয়।"
"They only eat the fruits in the orchards and the royal fruit-market runs a deficit."
"এরা কেবল বাগানের ফল খেয়ে ফেলে এবং রাজকীয় ফলের বাজারে ঘাটতি দেখা দেয়।"
He called the minister, and commanded, "Educate it."
তিনি মন্ত্রীকে ডাকলেন এবং আদেশ দিলেন, "একে শিক্ষা দাও।"
The King's nephew was given the responsibility of educating the bird.
রাজার ভাগ্নেকে পাখিটিকে শিক্ষা দেওয়ার দায়িত্ব দেওয়া হলো।
The scholars held long discussions, the subject being - "What is the reason behind the foolishness of this creature?"
পন্ডিতেরা দীর্ঘ আলোচনা করলেন, বিষয়বস্তু ছিল— "এই প্রাণীর বোকামির পিছনের কারণ কী?"
The conclusion was: much learning could not be stored in the tiny nest that the bird could make with just chips and twigs.
সিদ্ধান্ত হলো: পাখিটি কেবল খড়কুটো দিয়ে যে ছোট বাসা বানায়, তাতে বেশি বিদ্যা ধরবে না।
So, first of all, it was necessary to build a good cage for it.
তাই, সবার আগে এর জন্য একটি ভালো খাঁচা তৈরি করা প্রয়োজন।
The scholars got amply rewarded and went home merrily.
পন্ডিতেরা প্রচুর পুরস্কার পেলেন এবং মনের আনন্দে বাড়ি ফিরে গেলেন।
The goldsmith started building the cage.
স্যাকরা (স্বর্ণকার) খাঁচা তৈরি করতে শুরু করল।
The cage turned out to be so exquisite that everyone under the sun rushed to see it.
খাঁচাটি এতই চমৎকার হলো যে দেশ-বিদেশের সবাই সেটি দেখতে ছুটে এল।
Some said, "Education indeed!" Others said,
কেউ বলল, "শিক্ষা একেই বলে!" অন্যরা বলল,
"Education or no education, at least the bird has got the cage! What a lucky bird!"
"শিক্ষা হোক বা না হোক, অন্তত পাখিটি তো খাঁচাটা পেয়েছে! কী ভাগ্যবান পাখি!"
The goldsmith got a bagful of rewards. He set out for home cheerfully.
স্যাকরা এক থলি পুরস্কার পেল। সে হাসিখুশি মনে বাড়ির দিকে রওনা দিল।
The pundit came to teach the bird. He took a pinch of snuff and said, "A few books won't do."
পন্ডিতমশাই পাখিকে পড়াতে এলেন। তিনি এক টিপ নস্যি নিলেন এবং বললেন, "অল্প কটা বইয়ে চলবে না।"
The nephew summoned the scribes.
ভাগ্নে লিপিকরদের (যারা পুঁথি নকল করে) তলব করলেন।
They copied from the books and copied from those copies and made an enormous mound of such things.
তারা বই থেকে নকল করল এবং সেই নকল থেকে আবার নকল করে সেগুলোর এক বিশাল স্তূপ বানিয়ে ফেলল।
Whoever saw it, said, "Bravo! Learning is going to overflow!"
যেই তা দেখল, বলল, "সাবাস! বিদ্যা তো এবার উপচে পড়বে!"
The scribes got cartfuls of rewards. At once they rushed home. None of their descendants faced any poverty ever since.
লিপিকরেরা গাড়ি বোঝাই পুরস্কার পেল। তখনই তারা বাড়ির দিকে ছুটল। তাদের বংশধরদের আর কখনও দারিদ্র্যের মুখ দেখতে হয়নি।
The nephew was always busy, doing endless number of things regarding the surveillance of the precious cage.
মূল্যবান খাঁচাটির তদারকি নিয়ে ভাগ্নে সর্বদা অগণিত কাজে ব্যস্ত থাকতেন।
Repairs were quite frequent. Apart from that, there was the washing and the cleaning and the polishing of the cage.
মেরামত তো লেগেই থাকত। তা ছাড়া, খাঁচা ধোয়া, মোছা এবং পালিশ করা তো ছিলই।
Everyone admitted, "Sure signs of improvement."
সবাই স্বীকার করল, "উন্নতির নিশ্চিত লক্ষণ।"

Many people were employed and to supervise them, many more people were employed.
অনেক লোক বহাল করা হলো এবং তাদের তদারকি করার জন্য আরও অনেক লোক নিযুক্ত হলো।
Each of them got a handful of coins every month and filled their chests with them.
তারা প্রত্যেকে প্রতি মাসে এক মুঠো করে মুদ্রা পেত এবং তা দিয়ে তাদের সিন্দুক বোঝাই করত।
They, their brothers, sisters and cousins began to live in great luxury and happiness.
তারা এবং তাদের ভাই, বোন ও জ্ঞাতি-ভাইবোনেরা মহাসুখে এবং বিলাসিতায় দিন কাটাতে লাগল।
The world lacks many things; only fault-finders are there in plenty.
পৃথিবীতে অনেক কিছুরই অভাব আছে; কেবল নিন্দুকদের অভাব নেই।
They said, "There are improvements of the cage all right, but nobody cares for the bird."
তারা বলল, "খাঁচার তো বেশ উন্নতি হচ্ছে, কিন্তু পাখিটার খোঁজ কেউ রাখে না।"
The words reached the King's ears. He called the nephew and said, "What's this I hear, dear nephew?"
কথাটি রাজার কানে গেল। তিনি ভাগ্নেকে ডেকে বললেন, "ভাগ্নে, এ কী কথা শুনছি?"
The nephew said, "Your Majesty! If you want to know the truth then call the goldsmith, send for the pundits and the scribes, summon the repairmen and their supervisors."
ভাগ্নে বলল, "মহারাজ! সত্যটা যদি জানতে চান তবে স্যাকরাকে ডাকুন, পন্ডিত ও লিপিকরদের খবর পাঠান, মেরামতকারী ও তাদের তদারককারীদের তলব করুন।"
"The fault-finders cannot make both ends meet and talk nonsense."
"নিন্দুকেরা খেয়ে-পরে বাঁচতে পারে না বলেই আজেবাজে বকে।"
The situation became crystal-clear to the King, and a gold necklace adorned the nephew's neck.
রাজার কাছে পরিস্থিতি একেবারে পরিষ্কার হয়ে গেল, এবং ভাগ্নের গলায় শোভা পেল এক সোনার হার।
The King wished to see for himself the lightning speed at which education was proceeding.
রাজা নিজে চোখে শিক্ষার বিদ্যুৎগতি অগ্রগতি দেখতে চাইলেন।
So one day he came to the education centre with his entire entourage of friends, companions and courtiers.
তাই একদিন তিনি তাঁর সমস্ত বন্ধু-বান্ধব, সঙ্গী এবং পাত্র-মিত্রদের নিয়ে শিক্ষাকেন্দ্রে উপস্থিত হলেন।
As soon as he reached the entrance, there arose a chorus of bells and drums and harps and flutes... and cymbals.
তিনি সদর দরজায় পৌঁছানো মাত্রই শাঁখ, ঘন্টা, ঢাক, ঢোল, কাঁাসি, বাঁশি এবং আরও নানা বাদ্যযন্ত্রের সমবেত নিনাদ শুরু হলো।
The pundits swung their pig-tails and started chanting hymns at the top of their voices.
পন্ডিতেরা তাদের টিকি দুলিয়ে গলা ফাটিয়ে মন্ত্রপাঠ শুরু করলেন।
The repairmen and the labourers and the goldsmith and the scribes and the supervisors and the cousins greeted the King with a huge uproar.
মিস্ত্রি, মজুর, স্যাকরা, লিপিকর, তদারককারী এবং মামাতো-পিস্তুতো ভাইরা তুমুল কলরবে রাজাকে জয়ধ্বনি জানাল।
The Nephew said, "Your Majesty! What do you think?"
ভাগ্নে বলল, "মহারাজ! কী মনে হয়?"
The King said, "Amazing! This is a non-trivial amount of sound!"
রাজা বললেন, "আশ্চর্য! শব্দের ঘটা তো কম নয়!"
The Nephew said, "It's not just the sound Your Majesty, there is also a non-trivial amount of money behind it."
ভাগ্নে বলল, "কেবল শব্দ নয় মহারাজ, এর পিছনে অর্থের ঘটাও কম নেই।"
The King was extremely pleased. He started back.
রাজা অত্যন্ত খুশি হলেন। তিনি ফেরার পথ ধরলেন।
He came out of the front door and was about to ride his elephant, when a fault-finder, who had been hiding in a bush, yelled, "Your Majesty! Have you looked at the bird?"
তিনি সদর দরজা দিয়ে বেরিয়ে হাতির পিঠে চড়তে যাবেন, এমন সময় ঝোপের আড়ালে লুকিয়ে থাকা এক নিন্দুক চেঁচিয়ে বলল, "মহারাজ! আপনি কি পাখিটাকে দেখেছেন?"
The King was startled. He said, "Oh! I forgot. I didn't see the bird after all."
রাজা চমকে উঠলেন। তিনি বললেন, "ওহো! আমি তো ভুলেই গেছি। পাখিটাকে তো দেখাই হলো না।"
He went in once again and told the pundit, "I want to see your method of educating the bird."
তিনি আবার ভিতরে গেলেন এবং পন্ডিতকে বললেন, "আমি তোমাদের পাখি পড়ানোর কায়দাটা দেখতে চাই।"

And he saw it. Very pleasing indeed.
এবং তিনি তা দেখলেন। সত্যিই খুব মনোরম।
The method was so overwhelming compared to the bird that one could hardly notice the bird.
পাখির তুলনায় শিক্ষাদান পদ্ধতিটা এতই বিশাল ও জাঁকালো ছিল যে পাখিটিকে নজরেই পড়ছিল না।
It seemed it was rather irrelevant to look at the bird.
মনে হলো, পাখিটিকে দেখার কোনো প্রয়োজনই নেই।
The King understood that the arrangements were faultless.
রাজা বুঝলেন যে আয়োজনে কোনো ত্রুটি নেই।
There was no corn in the cage, no water either.
খাঁচায় দানাপানি কিছুই নেই।
Only heaps of pages had been torn out from heaps of books; and with the tip of a pen, those pages were being stuffed into the bird's mouth.
কেবল রাশি রাশি বই থেকে রাশি রাশি পাতা ছিঁড়ে কলমের ডগা দিয়ে সেই পাতাগুলো পাখির মুখের মধ্যে ঠুসে দেওয়া হচ্ছিল।
There was no room in the mouth for the bird to squeeze out a cry, let alone a tune.
গান তো দূরের কথা, একটু আর্তনাদ করার মতো জায়গাও পাখির মুখে অবশিষ্ট ছিল না।
It was really a terribly pleasing sight.
দৃশ্যটি সত্যিই রোমাঞ্চকর রকমের মনোরম ছিল।
This time, before mounting the elephant, the King ordered the ear-pulling expert to pull the fault-finder's ears severely.
এবার, হাতির পিঠে ওঠার আগে, রাজা কানমলা-বিশেষজ্ঞকে হুকুম দিলেন নিন্দুকের কান খুব ভালো করে মলে দিতে।
In a rather respectable and predictable way, the bird became half-dead as the days passed.
দিন যত গেল, পাখিটি বেশ ভদ্রস্থ ও প্রত্যাশিত ভাবেই আধমরা হয়ে গেল।
The guardians understood that the situation was hopeful.
অভিভাবকেরা বুঝলেন যে অবস্থা বেশ আশাব্যঞ্জক।
But still - as its bad habits were - the bird looked at the morning sun and flapped its wings in a very objectionable manner.
কিন্তু তবুও—স্বভাবদোষে—পাখিটি ভোরের আলোর দিকে তাকাত এবং খুব আপত্তিকরভাবে ডানা ঝাপটাত।
Some days it was even found to make an attempt to break the rods of the cage with its sickly beak.
কোনো কোনো দিন এমনও দেখা যেত যে সে তার রুগ্ন ঠোঁট দিয়ে খাঁচার শিক কাটার চেষ্টা করছে।
The administrator said, "What audacity!"
কোতোয়াল বলল, "কী আস্পর্ধা!"
Immediately, the blacksmith came to the education department with bellows and fire and hammer and chisels.
সঙ্গে সঙ্গে কামার হাপর, আগুন, হাতুড়ি ও ছেনি নিয়ে শিক্ষা বিভাগে হাজির হলো।
His hits were absolutely spectacular!
তার পিটুনি ছিল সত্যিই দেখার মতো!
An iron chain was manufactured and the wings of the bird were cut off.
লোহার শিকল তৈরি হলো এবং পাখির ডানা কেটে ফেলা হলো।
The King's relatives shook their heads gravely and said, "In this land, you see, the birds are not only stupid, but ungrateful as well."
রাজার আত্মীয়রা গম্ভীরভাবে মাথা নেড়ে বললেন, "এ দেশে পাখিরা যে কেবল বোকা তাই নয়, অকৃতজ্ঞও বটে।"
Then the pundits came with a pen in one hand and a spear in another and did something which one could really call education.
তারপর পন্ডিতেরা এক হাতে কলম আর এক হাতে বর্শা (সড়কি) নিয়ে এলেন এবং এমন কান্ড করলেন যাকে সত্যিই শিক্ষা বলা যায়।
The blacksmith became very well-to-do. His wife got gold ornaments.
কামার খুব বিত্তশালী হয়ে উঠল। তার গিন্নির গায়ে সোনার গয়না উঠল।
The administrator gained a title from the King for his alertness.
কোতোয়াল তার সতর্কতার জন্য রাজার কাছ থেকে খেতাব পেল।
The bird died - no one knew when.
পাখিটি মরে গেল—কেউ জানল না কখন।
The infamous fault-finder spread the news, "The bird has died."
কুখ্যাত নিন্দুক রটিয়ে দিল, "পাখি মরে গেছে।"
The King called the nephew and asked, "Dear nephew, what is this that I hear?"
রাজা ভাগ্নেকে ডেকে জিজ্ঞেস করলেন, "ভাগ্নে, এ কী কথা শুনছি?"
The nephew said, "Your Majesty, the bird's education is now complete."
ভাগ্নে বলল, "মহারাজ, পাখির শিক্ষা এখন সম্পূর্ণ হয়েছে।"
The King asked, "Does it still jump?"
রাজা জিজ্ঞেস করলেন, "সে কি আর লাফালাফি করে?"
The nephew said, "God forbid."
ভাগ্নে বলল, "আরে রাম! (মোটেই না)"

"Does it still fly?"
"সে কি আর ওড়ে?"
"No."
"না।"
"Does it sing any more?"
"সে কি আর গান গায়?"
"No."
"না।"
"Does it scream if it doesn't get food?"
"দানা না পেলে কি সে আর চেঁচায়?"
"No."
"না।"
The King said, "Bring the bird in. I would like to see it."
রাজা বললেন, "পাখিটাকে আনো। আমি তাকে দেখব।"
The bird was brought in. With it came the administrator, the guards, the horsemen.
পাখিটিকে আনা হলো। তার সাথে এল কোতোয়াল, পাইক, বরকন্দাজ ও অশ্বারোহীরা।
The King felt the bird. It didn't open its mouth and didn't utter a word.
রাজা পাখিটিকে টিপে দেখলেন। সে মুখও খুলল না এবং টুঁ শব্দটিও করল না।
Only the pages of books, stuffed inside its stomach, raised a ruffling sound.
কেবল তার পেটের মধ্যে ঠাসা বইয়ের পাতাগুলো খসখস গজগজ শব্দ করতে লাগল।
Outside, where the gentle south wind and the blossoming woods were heralding spring, the young green leaves filled the sky with a deep and heavy sigh.
বাইরে, যেখানে মৃদু দক্ষিণ বাতাস এবং মুকুলিত বন বসন্তের আগমন বার্তা ঘোষণা করছিল, সেখানে কচি সবুজ পাতাগুলো আকাশকে এক গভীর ও ভারী দীর্ঘশ্বাসে পূর্ণ করে দিল।
