PASSAGE – 1 (FULL PASSAGE)

Read the passage carefully and answer the questions that follow:

We live on the Big Half Moon Island. "We are Father and Claude and I and Aunt Esther and Mimi and Dick. It used to be only Father and Claude and I. It is all on account of the kite that there are more of us. This is what I want to tell you about.

Father is the keeper of the Big Half Moon Lighthouse. I am eleven years old. Claude is twelve. In winter, when the harbor is frozen over, we all move over to the mainland. As soon as spring comes, back we sail to our own dear island.

The funny part used to be that people always pitied us when the time came for us to return. They said we must be so lonesome over there, with no other children near us. Of course, Claude and I would have liked to have someone to play with us. It is hard to run pirate caves and things like that with only two. But we used to quarrel a good deal with the mainland children in winter. So, it was perhaps just as well that there were none of them on the Big Half Moon. Claude and I never quarreled.

To be sure, Father didn't seem to have any relations except us. This used to puzzle Claude and me. Everybody on the mainland had relations. Why hadn't we? Was it because we lived on an island? We thought it would be so jolly to have an uncle and aunt and some cousins. Once we asked Father about it, but he looked so sorrowful that we wished we hadn't. He said it was all his fault. Claude and I didn't understand what he meant.

Full Unseen Passage

Siliguri, 27th April: The Department of English, in collaboration with the IQAC of Surya Sen Mahavidyalaya, organized a two-day interdepartmental workshop titled "Bridging Words: A Translation Workshop on Regional Languages" on 24 and 25 April, 2025. Poet and translator Shyamali Sengupta (Odiya and Bangla) and eminent playwright, poet and translator Krishna Pradhan (Nepali, Bangla and English) served as the resource persons of the workshop. The initiative aimed to enhance students' translation skills, deepen their understanding of translation theories and practices, and highlight translation as a viable professional avenue. "Developing proficiency in translation tasks with accuracy and fluency can open doors to professional opportunities," noted Dr. P.K. Mishra, Principal of the college, in his inaugural address.

Dr. Arnab Baul, Head of the English Department, stressed the intricate relationship between translation and identity, pointing out that a translator navigates not only the author's and reader's identities, but also the identity of their own.

Workshop Coordinator Prof. Sutapa Saha underlined the role of translation in fostering global communication and promoting intercultural understandings. IQAC coordinator Dr. Babli Mondal fondly recalled how translated European comics had shaped young minds, demonstrating the transformative power of translation at an early age.

Sharing their personal experiences, both Sengupta and Pradhan emphasized the delicate balance between remaining faithful to the source text and adapting content to suit cultural and linguistic nuances. They highlighted the importance of respecting regional idioms and expressions while preserving the author's original intent.

The second day of the workshop featured hands-on training sessions where participants practised translating texts, received feedbacks, and engaged in peer critiques, fostering a collaborative learning atmosphere. Prof. Paramita Dasgupta from the English Department anchored the session.
