Explanation :
The journey began like a holy pilgrimage. Everyone was excited, happy, and their minds were uplifted. Because of their enthusiasm, even heavy burdens felt light. In the next stage, they looked around curiously but did not face any serious challenges. The hot sun seemed to reflect their inner energy and passion.
Bengali Meaning (বাংলা অর্থ):
এটি এক তীর্থযাত্রা হিসাবে শুরু হয়েছিল। সবার মন উৎফুল্ল হয়ে উঠেছিল এবং আনন্দে বোঝাগুলোও হালকা মনে হচ্ছিল। দ্বিতীয় পর্যায়ে তারা কৌতূহল নিয়ে চারপাশ দেখল, কিন্তু কোনো বড় পরীক্ষা এল না। জ্বলন্ত রোদ যেন তাদের ভেতরের উদ্দীপনা ও ক্রোধের সঙ্গে মিলে যাচ্ছিল।
Stanza 2
We stood it very well, I thought,
Observed and put down copious notes
On things the peasants sold and bought
The way of serpents and of goats.
Three cities where a sage had taught.
Explanation (English):
The speaker says they tolerated the difficulties well. They carefully observed everything and noted down details. They watched what villagers were selling and buying, noticed snakes and goats along the way, and visited three cities where a wise teacher had once taught.

কবি মনে করেন, তারা কষ্টগুলো ভালোভাবেই সহ্য করেছিল। তারা মনোযোগ দিয়ে সবকিছু লক্ষ্য করল এবং প্রচুর নোট নিল। গ্রামবাসীরা কী কিনছে-বেচছে, সাপ ও ছাগলের পথচলা, সবই তারা দেখল। তারা তিনটি শহর ঘুরল, যেখানে এক জ্ঞানী সাধু একসময় শিক্ষা দিয়েছিলেন।
Stanza 3
But when the differences arose
On how to cross a desert patch,
We lost a friend whose stylish prose
Was quite the best of all our batch.
A shadow falls on us and grows.
Explanation (English):
Soon disagreements began among them about how to cross a desert area. Because of this conflict, they lost a companion, a talented writer, who was admired by all. This loss created sadness and a dark shadow over the group.
Bengali Meaning:
কিছুদিন পর মরুভূমি পার হওয়ার উপায় নিয়ে মতভেদ দেখা দিল। এই মতভেদের কারণে তারা একজন প্রিয় বন্ধু হারাল, যিনি খুব সুন্দর গদ্য লিখতেন। তাঁর প্রস্থান সবার মনে দুঃখের ছায়া ফেলল এবং সেই ছায়া ক্রমশ ঘনীভূত হতে লাগল।
Stanza 4
Another phase was reached when we
Were twice attacked, and lost our way.
A section claimed its liberty
To leave the group. I tried to pray.
Our leader said he smelt the sea.
Explanation (English):
In the next stage, they faced more troubles. They were attacked twice and even lost their path. Some members separated from the group, wanting independence. The poet tried to pray for peace. Their leader, however, kept their hope alive by saying he could smell the sea nearby.

এরপর তারা আরও বিপদের মুখে পড়ল। দু’বার আক্রমণের শিকার হল এবং পথ হারাল। দলের কিছু লোক স্বাধীনতা দাবি করে আলাদা হয়ে গেল। কবি প্রার্থনা করার চেষ্টা করলেন। কিন্তু তাদের নেতা আশা দিলেন—তিনি বললেন, তিনি সমুদ্রের গন্ধ পাচ্ছেন।
Stanza 5
We noticed nothing as we went,
A straggling crowd of little hope,
Ignoring what the thunder meant,
Deprived of common needs like soap.
Some were broken, some merely bent.
Explanation (English):
The group continued their journey, but they were no longer united. They moved like a tired, scattered crowd with little hope. They ignored warning signs (symbolized by thunder). Even basic needs like soap were missing. Some people were completely broken, while others were just weak and bent.

তারা যাত্রা চালিয়ে গেল, কিন্তু আর ঐক্যবদ্ধ ছিল না। তারা একদল ক্লান্ত ও ছড়িয়ে-ছিটিয়ে থাকা মানুষের মতো এগোল, যাদের মধ্যে কোনো আশা ছিল না। বজ্রধ্বনি মতো সতর্কবার্তাকে তারা উপেক্ষা করল। এমনকি সাধারণ জিনিস যেমন সাবানও ছিল না। কেউ ভেঙে পড়েছিল, কেউ কেবলমাত্র দুর্বল হয়ে পড়েছিল।
Stanza 6
When, finally, we reached the place,
We hardly know why we were there.
The trip had darkened every face,
Our deeds were neither great nor rare.
Home is where we have to gather grace.
Explanation (English):
At last, they reached their destination, but they no longer remembered the purpose of their journey. Everyone looked sad and tired. Their actions seemed meaningless, not special or noble. In the end, the poet realizes that true peace and grace are not found in distant ventures but at home.

শেষে তারা গন্তব্যে পৌঁছাল, কিন্তু কেন এসেছিল তা আর মনে করতে পারল না। সবার মুখ ক্লান্তি ও দুঃখে কালো হয়ে গিয়েছিল। তাদের কাজগুলো কোনো মহৎ বা বিশেষ কাজ মনে হয়নি। শেষে কবি বুঝলেন—আসল শান্তি ও কৃপা কোনো দূরের যাত্রায় নয়, বরং নিজের বাড়িতেই পাওয়া যায়।

অবশেষে, যখন আমরা গন্তব্যে পৌঁছালাম,
আমরা প্রায় জানতেই পারিনি কেন আমরা সেখানে এসেছি।
যাত্রা প্রতিটি মুখকে অন্ধকারময় করে তুলেছিল।
আমাদের কাজগুলো না ছিল মহান, না ছিল বিরল।
বাড়িই সেই স্থান, যেখানে আমাদের করুণা/কৃপা অর্জন করতে হয়।
