"Wake up, wake up, little bird," she said. She began to cry and her tears fell on the little bird.

"I cannot sing unless I'm free, and if I cannot sing, I die," he said.

"I shut you in a golden cage because I loved you and wanted to have you all to myself. But I never knew it would kill you. Go. Fly away among the trees that are round the lake and fly over the green rice-fields. I love you enough to let you be happy in your own way."

She threw open the window and gently placed the little bird on the sill.

"I will come because I love you, little Princess," said the bird. "And I will sing you the loveliest songs I know. I shall go far away, but I shall always come back, and I shall never forget you."

Then he opened his wings and flew right away into the blue. September kept her window open, day and night, so that the little bird might come into her room whenever he wished.

Man and Trees

Trees are the greatest gift of nature to man. They give us fruits, flowers, timber, fuel, and many other useful things. Paper, rubber, and medicines also come from trees. Trees absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen. They help in bringing rain and prevent soil erosion. Trees also control pollution and maintain ecological balance. We should plant more trees and protect them to save our environment. Man cannot live without trees. So, we must love and care for trees as our green friends.

The Proud King and the Sea

Once there was a king who was very proud of his power. He believed he could control everything on earth. One day, he went to the seashore with his courtiers. He ordered the waves to stop. But the waves kept lashing at his feet. The king had to step back in fear. He realized that he had no power over nature. He became humble and gave up his pride.
