The Ecstasy

1. Where, like a pillow on a bed

যেখানে বিছানার বালিশের মতো

2. A pregnant bank swell'd up to rest

একটা উঁচু, ফুলে ওঠা নদীতীর বিশ্রামের জন্য সেজে উঠেছিল,

3. The violet's reclining head,

সেখানে এক বেগুনি ফুল তার মাথা হেলিয়ে ছিল,

4. Sat we two, one another's best.

সেখানে আমরা দুইজন বসেছিলাম, একে অপরের প্রিয় সঙ্গী হয়ে।

 

5. Our hands were firmly cemented

আমাদের হাত শক্তভাবে যুক্ত ছিল,

6. With a fast balm, which thence did spring;

যেন এক অদৃশ্য মলম তা জোড়া দিয়েছে, যা ওখান থেকেই উৎসারিত।

7. Our eye-beams twisted, and did thread

আমাদের দৃষ্টির রশ্মিগুলো জড়িয়ে গিয়েছিল, এবং সূতার মতো একে অপরকে বেঁধে রেখেছিল,

8. Our eyes upon one double string;

আমাদের চোখ যেন একটি দ্বৈত সূতায় বাঁধা ছিল।

 

9. So to'intergraft our hands, as yet

এভাবে আমাদের হাত জোড়া লাগানো ছিল,

10. Was all the means to make us one,

এটাই ছিল আমাদের এক হওয়ার একমাত্র বাহ্যিক উপায়।

11. And pictures in our eyes to get

এবং একে অপরের চোখে নিজের প্রতিচ্ছবি দেখার চেষ্টা ছিল,

12. Was all our propagation.

সেই চোখের মিলনই ছিল আমাদের সৃষ্টি বা মিলনের মাধ্যম।

 

13. As 'twixt two equal armies fate

যেমন দুটি সমান শক্তিশালী বাহিনীর মধ্যে ভাগ্য নির্ধারণ করে,

14. Suspends uncertain victory,

জয়ের ফলাফলকে অনিশ্চয়তার মধ্যে স্থগিত রাখে,

15. Our souls (which to advance their state

আমাদের আত্মাগুলো (যা নিজেদের উন্নতির জন্য বাহিরে গিয়েছিল)

16. Were gone out) hung 'twixt her and me.

আমার ও তার মাঝে তারা ঝুলে ছিল, সিদ্ধান্তহীন অবস্থায়।

 

17. And whilst our souls negotiate there,

এবং যখন আত্মাগুলো সেখানে আলোচনা চালাচ্ছিল,

18. We like sepulchral statues lay;

আমরা তখন মৃতদেহের মূর্তির মতো শুয়ে ছিলাম,

19. All day, the same our postures were,

সারাদিন আমাদের অঙ্গভঙ্গি একই রকম ছিল,

20. And we said nothing, all the day.

এবং আমরা সারাদিন কিছুই বলিনি।

 

21. If any, so by love refin'd

যদি কেউ ভালোবাসায় এতটাই বিশুদ্ধ হয়ে যায়,

22. That he soul's language understood,

যে আত্মার ভাষা বুঝতে পারে,

23. And by good love were grown all mind,

এবং ভালোবাসার দ্বারা যার চেতনা সম্পূর্ণ আত্মিক হয়েছে,

24. Within convenient distance stood,

যদি সে কাছাকাছি দাঁড়িয়ে থাকত,

 

25. He (though he knew not which soul spake,

তবে সে জানত না কোন আত্মা কথা বলছে,

26. Because both meant, both spake the same)

কারণ দুজনই একসাথে একটাই কথা বলছিল,

27. Might thence a new concoction take

তবে সে একটা নতুন উপলব্ধি পেতে পারত,

28. And part far purer than he came.

এবং সে আগের চেয়ে অনেক বিশুদ্ধ হয়ে চলে যেত।

 

29. This ecstasy doth unperplex,

এই পরমানন্দ আমাদের সংশয় দূর করে,

30. We said, and tell us what we love;

আমরা বললাম, এটি আমাদের বলে দেয় আমরা কী ভালোবাসি;

31. We see by this it was not sex,

আমরা বুঝতে পারলাম, এটি শুধু দেহগত আকর্ষণ নয়,

32. We see we saw not what did move;

আমরা বুঝতে পারলাম, আমরা আগে যা ভেবেছিলাম তা ভুল ছিল।

 

33. But as all several souls contain

কিন্তু যেহেতু প্রতিটি আত্মার মধ্যেই থাকে

34. Mixture of things, they know not what,

অজানা ও বিভিন্ন অনুভবের সংমিশ্রণ,

35. Love these mix’d souls doth mix again

ভালোবাসা এই মিলিত আত্মাগুলোকে আবার মিশিয়ে দেয়,

36. And makes both one, each this and that.

এবং উভয় আত্মাকে একত্রিত করে, যাতে একে অপরের অংশ হয়ে যায়।

 

37. A single violet transplant,

একটি বেগুনি ফুল যদি অন্য কোথাও রোপণ করা হয়,

38. The strength, the colour, and the size,

তাহলে তার রং, আকার ও গুণ বাড়ে,

39. (All which before was poor and scant)

যা আগে দুর্বল এবং সীমিত ছিল,

40. Redoubles still, and multiplies.

তা দ্বিগুণ হয় এবং বাড়তেই থাকে।

 

41. When love with one another so

যখন প্রেমে দুটি আত্মা এমনভাবে মিশে যায়

42. Interinanimates two souls,

যে একে অপরকে প্রাণ দিয়ে দেয়,

43. That abler soul, which thence doth flow,

তখন যে শক্তিশালী আত্মা তৈরি হয়,

44. Defects of loneliness controls.

সেটি একাকীত্বের সমস্ত দুর্বলতা দূর করে দেয়।

 

45. We then, who are this new soul, know

আমরা, যারা এখন এই নতুন আত্মা হয়ে গেছি, জানি

46. Of what we are compos’d and made,

আমরা কী দিয়ে তৈরি, সেটা বোঝি,

47. For th' atomies of which we grow

কারণ আমরা যে ক্ষুদ্র আত্মিক কণাগুলো দিয়ে গঠিত,

48. Are souls, whom no change can invade.

তা হলো আত্মা—যা কখনও পরিবর্তিত হয় না।

 

49. But oh alas, so long, so far,

কিন্তু হায়! এত দীর্ঘ সময় ও দূরত্বে,

50. Our bodies why do we forbear?

আমরা কেন আমাদের দেহগুলো থেকে দূরে থাকি?

51. They'are ours, though they'are not we; we are

সেগুলো আমাদের হলেও, আমরা শুধু তা নই; আমরা হচ্ছি

52. The intelligences, they the spheres.

জ্ঞান ও আত্মা, আর দেহগুলো যেন আমাদের চলার গণ্ডি মাত্র।

 

 

 

53. We owe them thanks, because they thus

আমাদের দেহগুলোকে আমরা ধন্যবাদ জানাই, কারণ তারা এইভাবে

54. Did us, to us, at first convey,

আমাদের আত্মাকে আমাদের মধ্যে প্রথমবার পৌঁছে দিয়েছিল,

55. Yielded their senses' force to us,

তারা তাদের ইন্দ্রিয়-শক্তি আমাদের আত্মার কাছে সমর্পণ করেছিল,

56. Nor are dross to us, but allay.

তারা আমাদের জন্য আবর্জনা নয়, বরং আত্মার ভারসাম্য রক্ষাকারী।

 

57. On man heaven's influence works not so,

মানবের ওপর স্বর্গের প্রভাব সরাসরি কাজ করে না,

58. But that it first imprints the air;

প্রথমে তা বাতাসে ছাপ ফেলে, তারপর মানবের ওপর পড়ে;

59. So soul into the soul may flow,

তেমনই আত্মা আত্মার মধ্যে প্রবাহিত হতে পারে,

60. Though it to body first repair.

যদিও তা প্রথমে দেহে প্রবেশ করে।

 

61. As our blood labors to beget

যেমন আমাদের রক্ত চেষ্টা করে

62. Spirits, as like souls as it can,

আত্মার মতো সূক্ষ্ম সত্ত্বা তৈরি করতে,

63. Because such fingers need to knit

কারণ এমন সূক্ষ্ম আঙুল দরকার মানুষের আত্মাকে গাঁথতে,

64. That subtle knot which makes us man,

সেই সূক্ষ্ম বন্ধনে যা মানুষকে সম্পূর্ণ করে তোলে।

 

65. So must pure lovers' souls descend

ঠিক তেমনই, বিশুদ্ধ প্রেমিকদের আত্মা নেমে আসতে হয়,

66. T' affections, and to faculties,

মনোভাব ও অনুভবযোগ্য ক্ষমতার স্তরে,

67. Which sense may reach and apprehend,

যা আমাদের ইন্দ্রিয় দ্বারা অনুভব করা যায়,

68. Else a great prince in prison lies.

না হলে এক মহান রাজপুত্র কারাগারে আবদ্ধ থাকে।

 

69. To'our bodies turn we then, that so

তাহলে চলুন আমরা আবার আমাদের দেহের দিকে ফিরে যাই, যাতে—

70. Weak men on love reveal'd may look;

সাধারণ মানুষ প্রেমের প্রকাশকে দেখে বুঝতে পারে;

71. Love's mysteries in souls do grow,

প্রেমের রহস্য আত্মার মধ্যে জন্ম নেয়,

72. But yet the body is his book.

কিন্তু শরীর হলো সেই প্রেমের প্রকাশের বই।

 

73. And if some lover, such as we,

আর যদি কোনও প্রেমিক, আমাদের মতোই,

74. Have heard this dialogue of one,

এই আত্মার সংলাপ শুনে থাকেন,

75. Let him still mark us, he shall see

তবে সে যেন আমাদের লক্ষ্য করে, সে দেখবে যে—

76. Small change, when we'are to bodies gone.

যখন আমরা দেহে ফিরে যাই, তখনও কোনো বড় পরিবর্তন ঘটে না।

The speaker and his beloved are sitting quietly on the bank of a river. It is springtime, and flowers like violets are blooming all around them. They hold each other’s hands and look into each other’s eyes lovingly, but they do not show any physical passion. Their bodies stay still, but their souls leave their bodies and meet in the air between them.

The speaker feels that their souls are talking to each other silently, like two people making peace after a battle. They sit this way all day, without saying a word.

Then the speaker imagines that if someone saw them, that person would notice their deep love. If that person could understand the language of the soul, he would feel purified and happy after seeing their pure love. The two souls have mixed together so deeply that they have become one single soul.

Finally, the speaker wonders why, even though their souls are one, they do not unite their bodies. He understands that the body and soul are both parts of being human. Their bodies helped bring them together, and now their souls have found perfect union.
